A Compendium

Introduction:

Dark Age

"Cast away from the surface of the Earth by the disappearance of the sun, Mankind lived hidden underground in the Fortress of Arx. Humans only have magic left to survive against Ratmen, Dragons and starvation...

But a much greater danger is hovering above the world of Arx Fatalis. Lurking in the eternal darkness of the mines, it feeds off the innocent souls of the city. It is not a monster. It is not human. It is pure evil."

FAQ

@@@__________________________________________@@@

What is this Arx Fatalis?
Arx Fatalis ("fatal fortress") is a single player RPG and action adventure set underground on a world whose star has failed. The various races have been forced underground (Goblins, Trolls, Ratmen, Humans, etc.) to cope with sub-freezing temperatures of the surface. But alas, something is rotten in the fatal fortress... An evil cult plots to manifest the evil Akbaa and destroy Humanity, and it is your job to stop it.

**The Nuts and Bolts**

World design:
It's not a sandbox game style but a interior level system. Although being somewhat open-ended, you will find areas nearly impossible to navigate due to level restrictions. Comparatively this game is much more linear than a TES series game, but makes up for this with brilliant and awe inspiring world crafting by the developers.

Archetypes and character development:
As with any CRPG you have the three basic character types; Mage, Warrior, Thief, or a combination of the three. Limitation; Although you're encouraged to develop your character to your liking, you will find a pure warrior or stealth type play through extremely difficult. Another limitation; You only have a choice playing a Human male with four preselect faces. Sorry guys, but no boob jiggly pony-tailed femme fatales... You will be Am Shaegar, the nameless hero and savior of Arx!

Skill points are divided into nine slots; stealth, technical, intuition, ethereal, object knowledge, casting, close combat, projectile, and defense.
Attributes are divided into four slots; strength, mental, dexterity, and constitution.
Indirect status values; resistance to poison, resistance to magika, armor class, life force, mana, and damage (onto others).

Skills and attributes explained;
Spoiler

STRENGTH - This stat gives you a damage bonus the higher it is. It also
influences your ability to carry and use heavier weapons and armor. Bonuses
to object knowledge and close combat are also given when points are put into
strength.

INTELLIGENCE - This influences your mana reserve, and your resistance to magic.
It also effects several skills including: ethereal link, casting, technical
skills, intuition, and object knowledge.

DEXTERITY - This determines your accuracy and the chance that you'll deal a
critical blow, and the time it takes you to aim. It also affects skills
including technical, stealth, close combat, distance weapons, and object
knowledge.

CONSTITUTION - This attribute affects your character's health and resistance to
poison. It also gives a bonus to your defense.

_____________________________________________________

STEALTH - This skill is pretty self-explanatory; it affects how silent you
walk, and how well-hidden you stay. When your stealth is very high, you can
even pickpocket NPC's.

TECHNICAL - This skill influences your ability to pick locks and disable traps.
I found this to one of the most useful, since you will discover many locked
chests and traps. Put points in this one.

INTUITION - Helps you detect hidden objects, secret passages, and detect traps.
This also gives bonuses to your buying and selling prices. Every 10 points in
this skill nets you +5% to selling prices and -5% to buying prices.

ETHEREAL LINK - This is one of the weaker skills IMO. It allows you to sense
hostile creatures in the area, as well as giving you the status of your enemy
while you are fighting. Ethereal link also adds a bonus to your mana
replenishment rate.

OBJECT KNOWLEDGE - This stat is extremely important because it allows you to
brew potions, repair your equipment, and poison your weapons. It also allows
you to identify higher level items. The more points you have, the higher level
item you can identify. I have yet to find any other way to identify items in
the game, so it's important to put some points here.

CASTING - This stat is relevant to your ability to cast spells, the power you
cast them with, and your resistance to magic used against you. I suggest at
least putting 30 pts into this skill to get Fireball, as it is the most useful
spell in the game. Even if you are a warrior-type character, make sure to get
points in the skill eventually. You don't want to be stuck at level 10 with no
casting, it will be much more difficult. Every 10 points in casting you can
use the corresponding level spells. For example, at 40% casting you can use
level 4 magic spells. Magic Resistance moves up 5% for each 10 points also.

CLOSE COMBAT - Adds a bonus to your attack attribute. Every 10 points in this
skill you receive 1 point bonus damage and 2% added to your critical strike
rate.

PROJECTILES - Same as close combat, except it adds bonuses to long-ranged
weapons, such as a bow and arrow. Be warned if you decide to be an archer;
there is not a great selection of bows, or an unlimited supply of arrows, in
Arx.

DEFENSE - Obviously, this adds points to your armor class, but it also effects
your ability to use a shield and resist poisoning.

Inventory system:
Inventory is a slot based system and expandable with backpacks. Like items do stack, and a key ring is available to help organize.

Combat HUD and UI:
Combat and UI is real time and 1st person only (take a look down if you would like to see your stylish leggings and footwear [img]http://www.gamesas.com/images/smilie/biggrin.gif[/img] ). UI is typical with a cross-hair and object name appearing when interaction is allowed. HUD is fairly typical and non-intrusive with the usual points of iconic info; mana and health levels, journal/spellbook, inventory and a map. Memorized spells will also come and go on the screen, as will the health level of your weapon (color coded).

Stealth:
As in many games, stealing, sneaking about in the shadows, and picking pockets can be both fun and financially enterprising. The sneak mode is not a toggle action (not sure about Xbox), so this requires some attention on your part. You will be able to pick pocket once you have a stealth level of 50. When you're close enough to an NPC a purse icon will appear. Before looking into the purse it's best to be behind the intended target and preferably in a shadow. What you see in the purse is also dependent on your skill level; The higher the skill, the more that will be available. Don't get caught however, or a bloodbath will ensue on one side or the other.

Leveling:
Gain skill and attribute points for distribution as you level. Leveling is handled by way of killing creatures/npcs and completing quests.

You begin with 20 points to distribute: 4 points for attributes, and 16 for skills. Start with attribute assignment as this will raise corresponding skills and give you a general idea of how the system works. None of the tinkering is written in stone until you hit the "done" icon. Take your time to see how all this works out. If you're in a rush and really don't care then hit the "generate" icon.

Place the 16 points for skills in whatever three tier archetype mode you wish to RP (note: Object knowledge is one of the most beneficial skills). With each level gained you will be rewarded another 16 points to distribute: 1 point for an attribute (again raising corresponding skills) and 15 for skill levels. This system is very forgiving if you feel you have made a mistake at some point. Reach a point in the quest that requires a certain skill, and you need to back-track? Dump all of your points to max that particular skill when you level up next.

Leveling point limits:

What platform is the game available on?
Both PC and Xbox.

Is Arx Fatalis a title supported by 360?
No. An emulation profile was not developed. But there is always hope as MS continues to develop more popular titles. Let the AF Renaissance begin!

What is the rating?
ESRB: M
OFLC: MA15+
(no nudity but expect blood, gore, and a little "romance")

Is there a demo?
Yes. http://www.fileplanet.com/85489/80000/fileinfo/Arx-Fatalis-Demo-%5BEnglish---Updated%5D, but only having played it perhaps eight years ago, I found it not to be a very good measure of the game. Digital copies cost about the same as two cups of coffee at Starbucks, so why not go all the way?

Where can I get this game?
http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/arx_fatalis (digital copy for $5.99 usd).
http://store.steampowered.com/app/1700/ (digital copy for $4.99 usd).
http://www.direct2drive.com/7867/product/Buy-Arx-Fatalis-Download (digital copy for $4.95 usd).
You may also find disc games in various forms and condition through trade and auction sites (ebay, amazon, etc.). The price will range anywhere from $9.99 to $60 usd.

What else do I need to support the game?
1. About 40-60 hours of your life.
2. http://www.arkane-studios.com/uk/arx_downloads.php (multiple language support as well).
3. If you're of legal age, an advlt beverage to help calm your nerves while exploring the crypts and lower levels.

Is there an editor with the game?
No. But the http://www.moddb.com/games/arx-fatalis/downloads/arx-fatalis-source-code is available on GPL terms. If you're feeling adventurous, then have a crack at it!

[update] There is also a utility which allows you to unpack both texture and sound files from archived folders; http://teachsolaisgames.com/utils/ArxPakFull.zip. This is the complete version with dependent dll (arxpak.dll and fmod.dll). I haven't tested this on Vista or Win 7. If the link becomes broken, then PM me with contact info as I have it saved.

[update] Even ArxPakFull seems to be missing an important dll (unicows.dll). http://www.mediafire.com/?95gmm5rbsjaugq4 (thanks, Dothan Thunderfist).

What are the system requirements?
500 MHz Intel Pentium CPU, 64 mb RAM, 16 mb VRAM, 4X CD-ROM drive, DirectX 8.0, 750 MB available hard disk space, Windows 95/98/2000/ME/XP. Patch 1.21 supports Win7 and Vista machines.

Is there a companion system?
Nope. It's just you against the cruel world of Arx.

Is there co-op or multi-player?
No. Once again this is a single player game.

What about a place to call my own?
You're rewarded an apartment in the castle. Storage is more than adequate, but the place is more like a motel room. Just a minor oversight by the devs.

Is there an in-game console for debugging?
No.

Lulz, I can cheat?
Yup. Here are a few;
Spoiler

The more complicated rune cheats
These cheats are taken from Paul Connelly's UHS file.Most cheats in Arx Fatalis require you to draw certain hidden runes.  Most ofthese runes are english letters. (A, D, F, L, M, O, P, R, S, U, W, X).Below are some crude drawings of each of the secret runes.  You start drawingwhere the 'x' is and follow it to the end.  Rune A-------   /\  /  \/	\X<-----\Rune D-------|\| \|  \|  /| /X/Rune F------------>|||XRune L-------X||| ----->Rune M-------|\	/|| \  / ||  \/  ||	  |X	  |Rune O-------  /\/  \X	\	/  \/Rune P-------| \|  \| /|XRune R-------|\| \| /|\X \  Rune S-------	 X	/   /  /____	  /	 /	/Rune U-------X	   ||	   ||	   ||	   |\_____/Rune W-------X		  /\		/  \  /\  /   \/  \/Rune X-------X	/\  /  \// \/___\Stairs Rune-------X---	|	 ---		|		 --->Here are the cheats that you can activate:GOD MODE--------Makes your character invincible.  This spell is NOT reversible.Activate it using M, A, X.WALK THROUGH WALLS (NO CLIPPING)--------Allows you to walk through walls, you won't fall either.  Is reversible.(De)Activate it using Stairs, Stairs, Stairs.LORD INUT'S SWORD--------Gives you a very powerful sword.Activate using P, O, M.MARIANA--------This is a weird one.  It displays "Mariana!" and places a portrait of a weirdlady on your screen.  NOT reversible.Activate using M, A, R.QUICK MOVEMENT--------Makes you constantly move very quickly.  NOT reversible.Activate using R, A, F.REVEAL AUTOMAP--------Inscribes the map of the whole level you are exploring.Activate using S, O, S.SUPER DEFORMED MODE--------Makes NPC's heads huge.  Is reversible.Activate using S, D, S, D.ULTIMA UNDERWORLD MODE--------Reduces graphics to the level of UUW.Activate using U, U, W.

This is the simplest and most frequently used cheat
CHICKEN CHEAT--------There is a very strange cheat at the beginning of the game that will give youtons of good stuff. It's called the CHICKEN CHEAT.To activate the chicken cheat, escape from your cell and kill the goblin. Inthe corner of the room with the table there are two bones. Pick up the leftbone and use it on the chair (double-click NOT attack) 10 times. The cheatplaces all runes in your spellbook, and gives you many great items. It alsoplaces some strange items.A recycle bin.2 Scuba Tanks.A chicken icon.Use any item on the recycle bin to destroy it for good.Use the recycle bin on the chicken to read a random note in the game.Use the scuba taks on the recycle bin to activate a portal to the seventh orfirst level, depending on the icon used.Use the ring on any icons to get random items.

Creatures of Arx Fatalis

Aggressive: (stats courtesy of Logik, italicized comments courtesy of antseezee):

Goblins - Pretty much your basic fantasy variety and the first creature you should come into contact with. Not all that tough, kind of dumb and arrogant. Not all will be hostile and a few are quest related, but feel free to kill 'em if you so choose to RP. They were your jailers after all.

"Many consider goblins to be both stupid and clever. While their ugly appearance
makes them out to be a mutated pig, goblins are brute, strong, and arrogant.
They often feel cocky in their actions, and superior to the other races.
Unfortunately, they are fairly stupid, and can become overwhelmingly enraged
when the situation arises. Goblins hate humans, but have a "business"
relationship with the trolls. The trolls mine gemstones for the goblins in
exchange for a small share of gold. Goblins enjoy their foods quite
succulently, and protect them like scavengers in the sewers. Unfortunately,
goblins are fairly short, and prone to being killed quite easily. Because of
this, they enjoy attacking in large numbers. This doesn't mean they always get
along though."

Goblin Lord - A tougher variety of the Goblin. Careful with these guys at lower levels. They're just as stupid as their smaller counterpart but pack a mean punch.

Trolls - Big dumb brutes with a rudimentary culture and a penchant for gems and jewelry. These are the "diggers" and "miners" for the kingdom. Not all are hostile and a few are quest related, but if you do find yourself on the receiving end of their wrath, it's best to hit-and-run-bob-and-weave.

"The largest race, literally in all of Arx is the trolls. Trolls are gigantic
beasts, about five times that of humans. Their brute strength allows them to
easily mine the underground caves of Arx with ease. They can work almost five
times as faster than the other races when it comes to mining. Because of this,
they're often called upon when a cave must be cleared, or some gems must be
retrieved. Trolls are very friendly, especially towards humans, whom they have
a neutral-good relationship with. They also have relations with the goblins,
although it's more of a "business" type. The trolls mine, give gems to goblins,
and receive gold in return. Aside from that, trolls are the dumbest race in all
of Arx. Because of their brute strength, their mental abilities are penalized,
and they move with akward speed. Besides that, they can be useful allies for Am
Shaegar in the future."

Ratmen - Thankfully these buggers only exist on one level of the game. They use poisoned blades, teleport in and out of melee, have sneak attack bonus, and if that wasn't enough... They steal from you!

"The only race in Arx Fatalis who completely refused the treaty to move
underground was the rat men. Not much is known about these furry beasts. They
do not socialize with the other races, and attack anyone who comes within their
sight. Because of this, the rat men live below most of the races, and no one
bothers with them. Rat men enjoy killing people for self gain, body parts, and
corpses. They're slightly below average height, and are quite speedy on their
feet. They often use teleportation techniques when attacking, and also try to
sneak up behind their opponents. This is truly the only race you cannot
socialize with on the land of Arx, for it's not within their own abilities to
do so."

Dwarves - I'll put this one here, because technically they only exist in raw meat form. Useful as bait.

"One of the primary reasons everyone was able to move underground was because of
the dwarves. Dwarves are short, plump, people who are masters of engineering,
mining, and science technologies. They often search for keen metals, and then
transform them for various uses in their daily life. Dwarves greatly oppose
magic, and do not permit it within their living quarters. They also have great
yearnings to feast on food, as it's within their own nature. Without the
dwarves, there never would have been an underground mine in the first place. It
was the dwarves' accomplishments that brought the races of Arx underground, and
since then, the dwarves have continued to mine downward towards the center of
the planet. They live on the bottom most floor in search of rare alloys, and to
satisfy their urges for engineering. Unfortunately, you won't "meet" many
dwarves because of a sad accident that occurred. You'll discover what happens
later in the game."

Sisters of Edurneum - Snake women. Sounds sixy right? Well they kind of are, or maybe it's just their enchanting voices. These "ladies" are the savants and sages of the kingdom. Not all are hostile, and a few are quest related. Powerful spell casters.

"These are the sole reasons that most of the inhabitants are still alive in the
underground mines to this day. The Sisters of Ederneum have provided the humans
with two special powers called Krahoz and Zohark which have allowed for magic
to be spread. The humans used these two rings to bring life to the underground
mines, by planting food, creating fire, and the most necessary elements to
survive. The Sisters are both a powerful and strange race. They're half woman,
and half snake, but without any "true" way of breeding. It is not known how
they reproduce, but they are considered the masters of magic for their supreme
casting abilities. The humans have a friendly, although fairly uncomfortable
relationship with the Sister Snakes. For without them, they probably would not
being alive to this day. Their appearance is like that of a Medusa, with a long
lizard tail, but woman-like head."

Giant rat - Like any game, these annoyances are in greater number than any other creature and have absolutely no sense of self-preservation. Blind kamikaze like attacks that do little damage (unless you've left your character in play while using the bathroom, these things pose little hazard).

Spiders - Arachnophobes... Three variety to give you nightmares; baby, advlt, and if "spider" didn't conjure enough skin-crawling heebie-jeebies Arkane brings us the were-spider! All deliver a poison, but the effects are dependent on your poison resistance.

Zombie - Not all that tough, but creepy as all hell can have. Did you forget to stake 'em? Well guess what... Look behind you!

Mummies - Keep a safe distance from these. They have a paralysis ability that they're quite proficient with, and the first time you see one crawl from a disturbed sarcophagus you'll damn near have a heart attack. Magic and ranged attacks are best

Lich - Very rare and very tough. Powerful spell casters that love to give you chase after casting a slow-time spell, then whittle your life force away with elemental damage or one of their summoned minions. The bright side to having to deal with these things of course is the swag.

Bat - Rare, small, fast and did I mention small? Good luck hitting one.

Golem - Magical constructs of powerful wizards. Activate using a golem heart. Very slow moving, so you shouldn't have much trouble.

Demons - These terrifying outer-dimensional beings are very fast and will make short work of you. Use your most powerful magic to defeat them.

Giant Worm - There is only one and it's not found in a giant bottle of tequila but blocking your route in a tunnel. Really more of an annoyance than anything. Hit-and-run or fireballs are best... rinse and repeat until the passage is decorated with worm goo.

Dragon - The apex creature of Arx as should be the respect due to a dragon. Powerful ice attack and high HP. Passive and quest related. Try and kill it if you dare!

The Dark Beast - A most foul hell hound of a time and dimension long forgotten. Unleashed by the excavations of the Dwarves (sound familiar?), and guess who gets to clean up the mess? This creature is nearly invincible, but there is always a way...

Passive:
Dogs
Pigs
Chickens

Passive (atmospheric):
Mice

Summarium Populi

______________________________________________________________

People of Arx

Named actors:(major players. Stats courtesy of Logik).

King Lunshire - The Honorable King Lunshire! As if the weight of the survival of the kingdom wasn't enough, now he has to deal with an evil plot to destroy the last refuge of the worlds population.

Falan Orbiplanax - The King's Astronomer. Very loyal to the king and this loyalty is payed in his assassination. Uncovers the plot of the cult. Take a peak at the stars in his observatory!

Enoill - A one-eyed man found in the Yellow Tulip. A low profile actor that plays a bigger role later in the game.

Felnor - The King's Alchemist. A very helpful chap that guides you, and opens his alchemy lab to you at a certain quest stage.

Kultar - The injured man in prison you help to escape. Repays your act of charity later in the game.

Ortiern - Captain of the defeated outpost guarding the human settlement. Helps you move into the main quest before succumbing to his mortal wounds inflicted by the Ylside attacks.

Carlos - Captain of the watch in the castle.

Alia - Daughter of King Lunshire (but not to his knowledge that she lives), and leader of the rebels. Helps you obtain an artifact.

Shany - Oh poor Shany. Daughter of Maria the merchant. Cute kid that gets into a bit of trouble with some cultists.

King Alotar - King of the Goblins. A fat, boorish pie-eating oaf that deserves a good beating.

King Pog - King of the Trolls. All in all, pretty affable for a troll.

Sister Chinkashh - Your liaison to the Edurneum at the palace library. She is a treasure of knowledge and will help you with many quests.

Sister Zalnashh - Queen Sister of the Edurneum. Helps you gain a second artifact.

Iserbius - Top dog in the Cult of Akbaa.

Akbaa - God of Destruction (end boss). Your very reason for existence in Arx.

Master - The driving force of your actions. Commands you to destroy the manifestation of Akbaa and return it to the care of the Noden for safe keeping.

Unnamed actors:

Guard - Like guards in most games, the Arx breed is exceptionally tough, but thankfully not as psychotic as their TES counterparts. Mind your manners when in the castle.

Priest - Good range of spell abilities, but kind of a push-over.

High Priest - Let the "high" imply a capability greater than a priest, and not some tree-hugging hippy side-lined by psychoactive pharmaceuticals. Very rare, yet very tough.

Ylside - Where to begin... Soldiers for the cult. Tanks with incredible speed. They will hurt you bad. Very badly. These guys are the warriors of Arx with a well deserved fearful reputation. Forget projectile attacks but precast fireballs at close range will drop them like a bad habit (usually two depending on your skill level). I have had luck defeating them in melee with a meteor sword and Ylside armor (obtained later in the game from an Ylside ally or a cheat), but even then they left me bruised, battered, and in desperate need of healing.

Armamentarium

Armory of Arx

Armor:

Although the variety may seem limited in comparison to other games (TES for example), but the functionality is balanced for the games constraints (time, creature and class types, etc.) and is aesthetically pleasing. All armor as well as weapons require you to have a certain level of object knowledge in order to use and will have benefits or penalties visible with the item info. With few exceptions, stealth and magic users will suffer penalties when wearing armor. There are only four slots to fill for armor; helm, chest, leggings, and shield.

Repairing your stuff:

Like TES your weapons and armor will degrade with use, however unlike TES when they reach zero durability, there is no way to repair; your trusty two-hander or favorite suit of chain will become useless. You may opt to do the repairs yourself, but this has the potential to do more harm than good and requires a very high Object Knowledge skill. Save yourself the trouble and turn your goods over to Miguel the armorer.

Enchanting your stuff:

This will be discussed in greater depth with the magic system, but a brief mention is due here; If you have the means to enchant armor or weapons with invulnerability, then do so.

Leather:

Your most basic fare of self defense. Usually made of boiling some type of animal hide in a caustic solution of urine, ash and water, formed, then treated with oil or fats for durability. If you want a balance of mobility and limited protection against glancing or indirect blows, then this is the suit for you.

Helm (stealth model only):Protection: +2, Special: Stealth +5%, Required Skills: 15 Object Knowledge, Durability: 90, Price: 750

Chest: Protection: +3, Special: N/A, Required Skills: 15 Object Knowledge, Durability: 60, Price: 550

Leggings: Protection: +2, Special: N/A, Required Skills: 15 Object Knowledge, Durability: 60, Price: 400

Stealth leather:

Chest: Protection: +2, Special: Stealth +5%, Required Skills: 15 Object Knowledge, Durability: 90, Price: 900

Leggings: Protection: +2, Special: Stealth +5%, Required Skills: 15 Object Knowledge, Durability: 90, Price: 700

Magic leather:

Leggings: Protection: +4, Special: N/A, Required Skills: N/A, Durability: 70, Price: 950

Chain:

The choice of any serious adventurer on a limited budget, or for those that require greater mobility with greater protection of leather. Tough and flexible, this armor is made of interlocking rings, custom sized, and quenched and tempered for durability. Weak against thrust or blunt attack damage.

Helm: Protection: +4, Special: Stealth -2%, Casting -2%, Magic Resistance -2%, Required Skills: 35 Object Knowledge, Durability: 80, Price: 550

Chest: Protection: +6, Special: Stealth -2%, Casting -2%, Magic Resistance -2%, Required Skills: 15 Object, Knowledge, 8 Strength, Durability: 80, Price: 1100

Leggings: Protection: +5, Special: Stealth -2%, Casting -2%, Magic Resistance -2%, Required Skills: 15 Object Knowledge, 8 Strength, Durability: 80, Price: 850

Plate:

Crème de la crème of protection. Reserved for the wealthiest adventuring warriors with both a discerning taste for close quarters combat and the skills to wield such an ungodly encumbering skin. Magic and stealth types need not apply. Fashioned of custom formed steel or iron interlocking plates, quenched and tempered for durability.

Helm: Protection: +7, Special: Stealth -5%, Casting -4%, Magic Resistance -4%, Required Skills: 15 Object Knowledge, 14 Strength, Durability: 90, Price: 900

Chest: Protection: +7, Special: Stealth -5%, Casting -4%, Magic Resistance -4%, Required Skills: 15 Object Knowledge, 14 Strength, Durability: 90, Price: 1600

Leggings: Protection: +7, Special: Stealth -5%, Casting -4%, Magic Resistance -4%, Required Skills: 15 Object Knowledge, 14 Strength, Durability: 90, Price: 1300

Magic Plate:

Helm: Protection: +10, Special: Stealth -5%, Casting -4%, Magic Resistance -4%, Required Skills: 15 Object Knowledge, 14 Strength, Durability: 90, Price: 1100

Chest: Protection: +10, Special: Stealth -5%, Casting -4%, Magic Resistance -4%, Required Skills: 35 Object Knowledge, 14 Strength, Durability: N/A, Price: 1800

Leggings: Protection: +10, Special: Stealth -5%, Casting -4%, Magic Resistance -4%, Required Skills: 30 Object Knowledge, 14 Strength, Durability: 90, Price: 1600

Mithril:

What? A Sindarin object of Tolkien mythos in a game world lacking elves? Pfft... Whatever! It's badass stuff! Just push aside the liberties and enjoy the ride.

Helm: Protection: +9, Special: Casting +1%, Magic Resitance +1%, Required Skills: 30 Object Knowledge, Durability: 90, Price: 1100

Chest: Protection: +10, Special: Casting +2%, Magic Resistance +2%, Required Skills: 30 Object Knowledge, Durability: 90, Price: 1800

Leggings: Protection: +8, Special: Casting +2%, Magic Resistance +2%, Required Skills: 30 Object Knowledge, Durability: 90 , Price: 1600

Shields:

(those things you use to sled on, cower from were-spiders, snag on door handles, and knock your own teeth out with)

Wooden: Protection: +2, Special: N/A, Required Skills: 8 Strength, Durability: 50, Price: 300

Metal(?): Protection: +3, Special: Stealth -5%, Required Skills: 10 Strength, Durability: 70, Price: 700

Tower: Protection: +5, Special: Stealth -5%, Magic Resistance +30%, Required Skills: 14 Strength, Durability: 70, Price: 1100

Specialties:

Ylside armor: Incredibly tough (unbreakable). Very little is known of it's origins. Think Chobham tank armor imbued with the evil magic of Akbaa. When the warrior dies, the armor disintegrates in a blinding flash.

Chest: Protection: +38, Special: Stealth: -20%, Casting: -4%, Protection from Magic: +20%, ST+3, Required Skills: ST 12, Price: 2100

Thanks. And yeah that's all my typing. Picked one hell of a day to do it of course... Been kicked off the forum about every 30 minutes.

Excerpts taken from sources are cited, but most of this is from memory, research, and the game manual.

The Merchants of Arx

Bartering is a rather simple affair in Arx. Visit your favorite merchant during their business hours, rummage through the chests, click on the item you want and it's yours as long as you can afford it (gold value deducted from your inventory), or sell items from your inventory in the same manner. The value of goods exchanged will be dependent on your intuition level.

Miguel the Armorer:

Located on level one (the Human fortress). If you wish for Miguel to repair your goods, then "grab" from your inventory and "use" the item on him. This service is not free mind you.

Great post you have put a lot of work into it. I printed out the RpgDot walk through a long time ago and it is a really good and thorough one. It is good you posted a link to it because I had lost it and couldn't find it again. Thanks.

Thanks. The RPGDot guide has a few minor errors that I'm addressing as needed, but it is by far the best aid for players. The level maps provided are invaluable! :read:

And some great news has been released by Nordic Games; They will continue to support and manage the http://forum.jowood.com/forumdisplay.php?f=338 which will also include the archived threads. Lot's of great information there.

TO ALL LOYAL CUSTOMERS OF JOWOOD & THE ADVENTURE COMPANY
As you may or may not be aware but JoWooD Entertainment AG went into administration earlier in 2011.

A group of games industry veterans from Sweden, have invested in the JoWooD brand, products and selected subsidiaries with the plan to reboot lots of games, IP's and of course communities.
Nordic Games GmbH has been founded and located in Vienna, Austria, to maintain business activities. It is a privately owned company, and is part of a successful network of video game companies.
This is the beginning of a new era for all games and over the coming months, product development will start on a variety of well loved and respected brands and products.

The Nordic Games GmbH team members have been carefully selected for their enthusiasm and desire to make a successful publishing company, and their continued love and attention to the JoWooD brand and products.
In the meantime, lots of activities are happening behind the scenes, so we have felt it necessary to shut down all old sites and forums whilst we prepare.

FYI, new websites will be created and launched over the coming weeks, and rolled out in a scaled manner and as such we respectfully request your patience and understanding during this time of transition. All old forum threads and data files will be included in the re-launch.

The aim of Nordic Games is to treat the games and customers with care and attention, so let's keep one eye on the past but also one eye to the future.

// yours respectfully, The Nordic Games Team

The Magic of Arx

“Whatever you think you can do or believe you can do, begin it. Action has magic, grace and power in it.”

~ Goethe

Of all the elements, features, loved, hated, celebrated, or cursed, the magic system of Arx Fatalis is it's much vaunted tabulation amongst other games of the same genre. Think of Arx, and it conjures up memories of either head-pounding frustration, or quiet exhales of satisfaction as you confidently gesture a complicated four rune spell that saves the day. It is the game, it is Am Shaegar, and from very early on you will need to flex this arcane mussel... There is no other reasonable (or enjoyable) way to complete the game as it was intended. Learn it, live it, love it. Now, lets get to the mechanics;

The system is gesture based casting (using the mouse) + [ctrl] key ([X] for Xbox). This mode is not a toggle function (certain wireless keyboard users with "energy saving" boards may find the signal loss aggravating). If you can write simple recognizable gestures in common Latin form, you shouldn't have too much of a problem doing this. If however your handwriting is non-Latin based (Arabic, Thai, etc) the learning curve may be a bit more steep. Either case, the logic of the "writing" is very rudimentary and similar to Cuneiform; The widest part of the stroke is where to begin, the thinest being the end.

Example:

http://oi52.tinypic.com/30bmlx4.jpg =

Having said that, the game engine is rather finicky about your hand-writing technique and grades your efforts as pass/fail. A passing grade will be followed by an audible sound of the rune. So make sure you have a clean mouse and pad to work with and take it easy on the caffeine or alcohol. Just practice a rune several times when aquired to gain familiarity.

Key points:
1. You have a spell book tabbed in the main character menu (quick-key; <-Backspace, Xbox = black/white button depending on setup).
2. You can "hang" runes on the screen for references by finding the spell you wish to cast in your spell book by clicking on the icon. This makes casting easier to emulate.
3. You can pre-save spells (three only) by the same manner as a cast, but hold the [shift] key then release [ctrl], "Y" on Xbox.
4. Try and avoid casting spells in battle. Positive contact from another actor will shift your attention back to combat mode and negate the cast.
5. Spells are leveled and made available when appropriate skill level is met.
6. Runes are expensive, rare and many require you to unlock certain levels via quests.
7. There are five spells I have found to be the most useful;

  • Aum Yok: Ignite fire sources. Perfect for lighting dark passages and rooms, or camp fires for a quick hot meal.
  • Nhi Yok: Douse fire sources. Darken passages and rooms or camp fires for added stealth.
  • Aum Yok Taar: Fireball. A good die-roll at mid level will drop just about any opponent upon the first or second cast.
  • Spacium Communicatum: Telekinesis. Interact at a distance.
  • Mega Spacium: Activate teleporter. Sister Chinkashh will aid you with the runes. Teleporters are located on each level.

Enchanting

Although this action is regarded more as a craft (the manufacture of game objects), a successful spell (Mega Stregum Cosum - lvl 8) cast is needed to finish the process. The enchanting system like many crafting actions is real time and not a mini-game.

Here is the general procedure;

1. Place the target item on the ground.
2. Select your reagent by double-clicking to grab.
3. Use your reagent on the targeted item (it should begin to glow).
4. Cast Mega Stregum Cosum. Target cursor will appear when successful.
5. Click on your target item (audible sound for success).
6. Equip item to verify changes, and enjoy!

*Note: not all reagents work with all items.

Here is a list of reagents used for enchanting;

Scrolls

Scrolls are an effective alternative for casting spells especially when low on mana or blocked from a cast due to level requirements or missing runes. These items are rare and very expensive, but many will be found as loot throughout the game. They work in the same manner as a precast spell.

Here is a list of scrolls;

Scroll example Seal Level of Power ____________________________________________________________Magic missle white 1 Heal yellow 2 Fireball orange 3 Dispell field green 4 Repel undead blue 5 Disarm trap red 6 Flying eye pink 7 Invisibility violet 8 Incinerate brown 9 Mass incinerate black 10

Excellent thread, very well put together! I commend you sir! It is great to see that there's still interest in this game. It seems that you have covered all of the important things about the game's mechanics.

One of the spells I did not see in the RPGDot pictures is the Uber Demon summon spell, which is:

Mega Mega Mega Aam Vitae Terra

It summons either a golden rat which is really fast and strong, deals quite the steady amount of damage and was worth about a 1000 experience (not sure about that), or it summons Marianna - a female warrior with incredible speed, wielding Lord Inuts sword and a suit of golden armor.
She deals out incredible amounts of damage and attacks the player immediately whe summoned, often killing with just a single hit. There's several strategies for defeating her, however I've found the best way to do it, is to summon her in one of the locked jail cells in the human kingdom and just [censored] her with Ice Field. When killed, she drops Lord Inut's sword and gives you randomly one of her armor pieces, which cannot be identified no matter how much object knowledge you have. If I recall correctly from looking through the game files, the armor is rather weak though, and doesn't show up on the player model. I'll check out the stats when I get back from work.

I am also in the process of recording a complete playthrough of Arx which I will post on youtube later on. Lytha's Let's Play for now is the best on youtube, but it still misses some secrets. Anyway, great job on this thread, keep up the good work :)

Thanks for that, Dothan. I eagerly await the playthrough! Let me know when the channel is started and I'll update the OP. I also plan on a post for crafting, trouble-shooting, and a wiki page. This may take some time with the later because of r/l. If you feel anything needs to be edited for clarity or accuracy, then post and I'll update. I'm playing through the game once again, so there are glaring errors being discovered either from memory or the walk-through's.

I've postponed the playthrough because of workload right now and the fact that there's a ton of stuff to do in the game. Now I'm just doing a normal playthrough and figuring out how to go about it since I want to cover every aspect of the game, but should get round to it somewhere about the winter holidays, but you can put up Lytha's playthrough which is http://www.youtube.com/user/LythaJuliania#g/c/3150A53E4DBE22C1(EDIT: Noticed you've got it in the first post, ignore this)

If you'd like I could help you out with the wiki page, since the game really does need one.

EDIT: An interesting piece of trivia I just remembered(since I saw you wrote this game is SP only), is that this game should've probably had multiplayer, since after dissassembling the .exe revealed a multiplayer menu :P
