Super hardcoe Play Style

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 2:36 am

Back in the 90's. I used to play Tomb Raider on the PS1. I couldn't afford a memory card, being a kid and my parents wouldn't get me one, so I had to do the game with one life. The same went for Resident Evil 1 for that matter.

It adds an amazing element of real fear to the game. Particularly when I had no choice as I had no means of saving the game. I used to be able to get a good couple of hours into Tomb Raider before I died. Each trap made my stomach turn as if it killed me then it was game over. The feeling added a whole new dimension to the game. As for Resident Evil, I used to get as far as the point where the zombies stop and you get those weird wolf men things, the one turns the handle in that hallway and you hear the pat pat pat of its feet and then wham! Game over...

Well last night I started a new Skyrim game and turned off all auto saving. I played it for a good couple of hours before a Spriggan killed me. They are so hard when you are at an early level and I litterally sh**t my pants when I saw it. I knew I stood no chance and so ran into the water to try and escape. Alas it seemed able to walk on water or something and I closed my eyes as it ended my quest.

That feeling of fear when I saw the Spriggan was brilliant. I will play the game through properly like everybody else but each of you should give the 'one life' method a go. See how far you can get.

Its just you, your armor, your weapon and whatever potions you might have vs the world of Skyrim. If you die then thats it. There's no running like a headless chicken into a Bandit camp and the howl of a wolf on the road makes you nervously look around. Gone is the attitude of, 'I'll just reload if I die' and the sight of a Dragon circling over head will make you hide for sure.

I did this a bit with Oblivion, and it was great fun. Once I'm pretty comfortable with Skyrim, sounds like it could be good!

I'm going to make it through all the story/lore content first, but this could be a lot of fun while waiting for mods.

Running from a Giant and the screen shakes knowing for a FACT that if he clobbers you then thats it. They scare the bejesus out of me when I have saved a moment ago let alone knowing I could lose the last three hours playing time.

It's 'almost' like real life but with magic and that.

It would be an awesome challenge to play this from start to finish on one life. I have been playing 70 hours and I am less then a 1/4 way through and if the Spriggen didn't get you the CTD would. :)

This sounds fascinating and I'm going to try this on subsequent playthroughs. I find that with the autosave being relatively frequent, sometimes I lose the feeling of real fear from dying. Being set back 5-10 minutes is a far cry from being dead permanently. However, I'd need the ability for 1 save at the end of the day

IMO I think Bethesda should add a save on Exit mode, so you have to play until you exit the game before it will save. Then each session will have the added 'real fear' feeling. I think it adds a whole new dimension to the game. Particularly the dungeons that take an hour to get through.

Heh that happen to me once, didnt have any healing potions and i was screwed big time. If you want to play hardcoe, try playing on expert and becareful what you do and i advise to pick up Alchemy for survival. Watchout for Bears they are tough cookies and hardly can outrun them. Expert seem more balance and well rounded level of play.

I did this in an RPG game. I forge the name now. I had bought my PS1 but my dad wouldn't fork out money for a memory card. I played for 3 days without turning off my PS1 but then the game crashed. i have furious memories of that 'til this day which prevents me from ever doing such a thing again. I might -might- try with Skyrim after a few playthroughs though

LOL, I had Jurassic Park for the Super Nintendo, its was quite an easy game but there was no way of saving it, it was broken I think. Anyway, my brothers and I used to play it (it was totally awsome by the way, switched from top down exploring to FPS in dungeons full of Dinosaurs). Rather than die, we would literally run out of time.

By that I mean bedtime would roll round and my mum would make us turn it off. Grrr.

Anyway, one night we played it, left the console on till morning and carried on playing it. The SNES was at melting point and the game eventually took 14 hours of playing to complete. The ending was brilliant, which was what I used to play games to see in those days.

Classic gaming. :^D
