Someone please confirm that Mario Kart Wii is not the extent

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 5:01 am

So I just bought a Wii, I know, a little late to the party. It came with Mario Kart Wii..

Please tell me this is not the graphical extent of this console, because it looks like a Dreamcast..why does this game look so bad? Do all Wii games look this horrid?

Compared to anything else this generation, Wii games have pretty low quality visuals. Don't expect to see very many pretty looking games on that system. Even the newest Zelda game is far behind most other games this generation. Doesn't mean the games are bad though.

The Wii is perhaps about twice as powerful as the GameCube, it isn't known for its graphical capabilities. There are much better looking games than Mario Kart Wii, but it's still 480p. Most overcome the system's limitations with unique art direction.

Some of the better looking games on the system:

Metroid: Other M
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Epic Mickey
Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Sin & Punishment: Star Successor
Okami
Xenoblade Chronicles
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Xenoblade Chronicles is probably the extent of the systems graphical capabilities.

Wii isn't praised for it's graphics. A better question would be who cares?

Xenoblade Chronicles is probably the extent of the systems graphical capabilities.

It was really impressive. Character models aren't the best you'd find even on Wii, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CUNNyNK-4w.

Well I didn't buy the Wii for its graphical prowess in the first place, but I just thought it looked downright awful. Mario Kart Wii doesn't look near as good as the games I've even played on the Gamecube lol. If it's twice as powerful, Mario Kart Wii certaintly isn't trying to show that off. o.o

I got it so I can DL older Nintendo games in one place, all the old classics of SNES, N64, plus being able to play Wind Waker and Metroid Prime. Basically, I got the Wii for everything it does, except being a Wii. :P

..wow, Xenoblade looks amazing. How's the gameplay? Worth buying? I love free roam JRPG's like FFX, is this similar? It looks a LOT like FFX just from that video, although I could be completely wrong.

Also, I'm looking online at the virtual console and while I can find the games, they have no prices? I can't figure out how much games cost. Like Majora's Mask on the virtual console, and it list the game and overview but gives no price lol?

It's really good. It doesn't have a whole lot in common with Final Fantasy X, though combat is actually pretty close to Final Fantasy XII. Areas are also much more open than Final Fantasy X. The only drawback is that side quests are pretty much all "fetch" quests or "kill X number of [enemy]." There are a ton of them though, so if you don't mind that sort of thing then you can nearly double your playtime (story takes about ~50 hours).

There are a number of reviews out there that manage to sum the game up better than I ever could, so I'd definitely look into it a bit.

Lol, I'm well acquainted with fetch quest, I have 4 level 85's in WoW. :P

And do you have any info on the query I had above your last post? About the virtual console?

Not sure why they don't list prices, probably be best to browse Virtual Console on your Wii. If memory serves me right, N64 games are generally 1,000 Nintendo Points, SNES/Genesis 800 and NES/SMS 500. Some go for a bit more though, like import titles.

Oh, ok.

How does this credit thing work? Is it like Microsoft points? I buy a card at a store and I redeem it for points online? Or is it something different?

You can add points to your account with a credit card or use point cards from retail.

Ah..ok, so it's exactly like the Xbox Live/Microsoft points. You can buy em at a store or just buy em with your credit card on Xbox live.

Alright, thanks for the help. Hopefully tomorrow I'll be doing some major N64 gaming on my Wii. ^_^
