I recommend, Game of Thrones, both the book and the series were good.
Also really recommend reading Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett, had me really rooting for the characters. Skip the series though

The stories I'm into right now:

TV:
LOST (believe it or not, I've never watched it until recently, but it's all on Netflix which is awesome. On Season 1 episode 4).
The Walking Dead (amazing stuff, all of season 1 is on Netflix as well)

Comics:
The Walking Dead
Haunt
Green Lantern

Books:
The Hunger Games (finishing up the third book)
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (on the second book)
Steve Jobs
In the Plex (great book on Google)

Movies:
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (US version)
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (wasn't bad, but typical action movie)
War Horse (really, really good story).

Video games:
Mass Effect 2 (good story)
Star Wars: The Old Republic (again deep story, or so it seems so far)

A Song of Ice and Fire. It should give you enough emotional impact to throw away the books then pick them back up and keep reading. Hopefully.

The last book I read was Yukikaze, an official Japanese to English translated science fiction about a pilot and his plane on an alien world. If you have watched the anime before, expect something greater with the book, it dives deeper into the lore and characterisation.

Stephen King's Dark Tower series is my second favorite series after Lord of the Rings. It's adventure/fantasy/horror/sci fi.

The Walking Dead comics are really good, and completely different from the show. There are several parts that will shock you/leave a big emotional impact.

A Song of Ice and Fire. (AKA Game of Thrones)
The OP said a week not a few months.

I'll vouch for the Hunger Games as well, quick read but pretty good.

The Name of the Wind.

Metro 2033 is a video game, but it's also a book. It could be hard to find an english copy considering that it was originally in Russian, but I've heard that it is worth it.
It's not that bad, just google "Metro 2033 by Dmitry Glukhovsky, and you should find a translation for sale on Amazon of something.

Also the translation is nowhere near as bad as some would have you believe.
