Post » Sat May 12, 2012 1:08 pm

are there any Nord mages here? are they any good?

i know breton and high elves get the magic racial bonuses. but i just can't stand the way they look, so i made a nord instead.

would like to hear your opinions.

I made an imperial mage for the same reason. I don't really care about the bonus.

and yes, i'm doing fine.

You would be about 5 levels behind in terms of how much magicka you have.

so it might be difficult early on, but in the grand scheme of things it won't make a huge difference. Are you intending on pure mage? You could try a combination of having heavy armour and magic, be a bit of a battlemage.

actually yes i wanted to be a pure mage. a mix of destruction and conjuration with some restoration.

Any race can play any class, however those with skill bonuses will simply have a slight advantage.. that is all..
But the way I look at it is, that i'm going to be putting hundreds of hours into my character, so I want to like every aspect about him and his looks, etc.. I'd rather be playing a character I like than one I don't with +5 or +10 skill points....

I got a Dunmer mage and I'm doing fine....I started with an edge on skills to Nords, but I'd say the Nord racial ability is much more useful for a mage than the DE one

Would an Altmer mage be best? I'm planning on making a pure Altmer mage now that they no longer have weakness to magicka.

Heavy Armor (or light armor if pure mage)
Destruction (problem is this magic can be weak at first)
Conjuration (helps big time since you can conjure a sword and magic shield. You dont have to pick Breton just for the summonable pet since you can buy that same spell VERY early in the main quest but the power that bretons have to absorb magicka is very useful)
Restoration (who doesn't like these spells? :P)

You would have the most magicka and your racial power is great so yes, definitely. I think they still have a weakness to magicka though?

Depends on the type of magic you really want to focus on.. I'd say either an Altmer or a Breton, depending..

I went with trying to be a Breton Mage, but since Destruction magic isn't all that effective against more than one enemy [no area effects or spellmaking them in] I always seem to be Conjuring a sword and casting "x"-flesh. So now I'm a Conjuring Warrior.

Just put some points into magicka early on and you'll be fine.

The Apprentice stone gives you a 100 point boost to magicka, so you'll want to get that as well.

Bretons don't get magic bonuses anymore, they just get magic defense bonuses.

If I had to play an altmer every single time I played a mage (and I basically always play some variation of mage and something else, anyway), then I wouldn't be happy at all. The bonuses aren't that important, although Altmer do have an unfair advantage in the functional extra levels they get.

That said, I don't know why you wouldln't like the way a Breton looks. I prefer Bretons when I'm not playing as Argonian, and want to be something more "human". They basically look like nords, but shorter, anyway.
