dancing robot!?

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 2:42 pm

started playing system shock 2 again the other night (played for the first time earlier this year, now on third playthrough, its too good) and at the ramsey recruitment centre year 3 i think it was, if you look in the window in the room you fall into at the beginning of each year you can see a dancing robot (i say fall into cos when you spawn in the room you fall a few inches, as if you had been suspended in mid air. just a little immersion killer no prob) . it was hilarious but found it odd since the rest of the game is mostly serious. anyway just wanted to know, any1 notice the dancing robot?

and i dont wanna hear "oh this is the dishonored forums, not system shock". the game should be talked about for years to come, not swept away into the *rusty metal* junk pile. if you have not played this game, go do it NOW! deus ex 1, arx fatalis & vampire: bloodlines too. the greatest games ever created.

Nice username, apdenton. I re-downloaded Deus Ex this summer. Still an amazing game.

Sad to say I never played system shock. I will have to rectify that sometime soon when I find a copy for sale.

Anyways hope progress on Dishonored is going well Arkane, cant wait to play it!

nice username yourself. i prefer arx fatalis to elder scrolls. its smaller so its a more solid experience. elder scrolls is too big, so there is less details than in other FP/RPG/IS. dungeons are bland & similar. side quests are fetch quests etc, rather than immersive encounters like in deus or arx, and you feel detached from the main story. what i like about elder scrolls is leveling your character and freedom. however those two aspects have been dumbed down since morrowind. still morrowind was good fun until i maxed my character out. then i got bored

anyways you should be able to find system shock 2 on the internet somewhere, ud be lucky to find it anywhere else. its a phenominal game, makes me sad it didnt sell well. i was only 9 years old when it came out and never heard about it till 2009 when researching deus ex on the net. one of the greatest games of all time just dismissed, WHY? a decent port to the ps2 like deus ex would have helped sales but ps2 didnt even exist then!

SPOILERS!!! things i would change about system shock 2 *just an opinion dont shoot me! still one of the greatest games*

- pacing- engineering cargo bay. id make it so you go to the second set of cargo holds later in the game.

- nanites used for the quantum reconstructor is increased by 50% for all difficulty levels

- hipfire accuracy is inconsistent and iron sights feature added, however hipfire accuracy can be increased (not to 100% though) by upgrading one of the attributes or skills. preferably weapon skills. although id like this feature not sure if it would be neccesary, since it is a corridor shooter there never is long range shooting.

- localised damage for enemies.....maybe the player too

- implants can be modified to last longer etc using the modify skill

- armour degrades aswell as weapons and can be modified using modify skill

- weapons inventory size varies

- option to remove the information bulletins (how to play) scattered around the ship in the options menu. or just completely remove them and add a help feature in the menus

- weapon modifying is more in-depth

- amount of cyber modules recieved from polito does NOT vary depending on the difficulty level you choose, except easy mode.

- weapons have individual reload animations

- research skill is cheaper to upgrade

still, this game is a masterpiece regardless and is one of the best gaming experiences to date.

SPOILERS

how did the monkeys get increased intelligence and awareness, psi powers too? was it the parasites linking them to the many or something? i think i missed an audio log or something, either that or xerxes or polito/shodan interrupted my audio log and i forgot to replay it.

just realised something else- when you first arrive at operations, deck 4, in the first room with the quantum reconstructer there is two audio logs that mention the name Malick. surely the character Malik from deus ex: human revolution is a reference to this?

Nope, I joined Arkane just as production began for Dishonored.
And I loved Vampire: Bloodlines. Who told you otherwise? :)

also, dagoth matt, if your still reading (hopefully not, ss2 too good to spoil) then your signature is flawed. now i know it is quoting someone else, however he cannot be resistant because in morrowind there is a limit to how many potions you can drink at one time. there you have it, his resistance is not what he claims so i will strike- deus ex is the greatest singleplayer game, with arx system shock 2 and vampire: bloodlines all in equal second place.

derailing my own thread temporarily to rant about skyrim.

really loving the game atm but deeply saddened by the removal of weapon/armour degrading, spell making, acrobatics skill and to some extent attributes(200+ perks replace attributes). there is other streamlining too but only minor annoyances. that said its 10x better than oblivion, and some new gameplay improvements have kept me from getting bored like dual wielding, weapon/armor reinforcing and shouts. dungeons are very interesting when compared to oblivion.

my only fear is getting bored of it. morrowind, although i played for possibly 100+ hours, i got bored before completing the main quest but really enjoyed the game. oblivion i gave up after 25hours, only lasted that long because of my love for fp/rpgs. worst game in the genre. skyrim im not certain how long ive been playing, but all is well so far. the world is fascinating and is definately worthy of GOTY. quests are slightly more interesting too. very happy with my purchase but just cant stop wondering how awesome skyrim could be if they didnt streamline aswell as adding all this new stuff. they streamlined many awesome gameplay mechanics and added stuff like wood chopping and getting married!? love the game but it COULD have been better in gameplay terms and story. still definately GOTY having so much fun.

what i want from skyrims gameplay-

1. crawl spaces. what is it with this? every elder scrolls and fallout game have areas that look accessible by crawling through. i try every time but am dissapointed. would make for some cool secret areas.

2. magic spell upgrade. upgrade a spell with rare runes that can only be found in secret areas or on bosses etc. each spell can only be upgraded once and you have to choose between 1 of 3 effects. for example use a rune with "flames" spell, you can choose between increased range, increased damage or increased area of effect.

3. return of acrobatics skill that increases jumping height and swimming speed. and has perks like- 20% reduction of falling damage. an evade manouver perk like in oblivion. a jumping off the surface of water perk like oblivion. and "reflex" perk- whenever you fall or get knocked off of a ledge an indicator appears which you can choose to ignore where you press Y to hang onto the edge and pull yourself up, possibly avoiding death. (i guess acrobatics was probably removed to stop players getting out of the map but i already have got out of the map twice)

4. return of attributes and any perks that conflict with them are replaced/modified. (not neccessary really i just miss attributes)

5. weapon degrading. rediculous that this is gone. it encourage full use of your arsenal and ensured that you couldnt spam OP weapons, or at least hindered said spamming.

6. when viewing weapons in the menus text is shown that tells you if a weapon is one or two handed.

7. HUD icons that display active magical effects. can be turned off

8. air meter that shows how much air left when underwater. can be turned off.

9. useful environment. just like the flammable liquid that you can ignite to aid you in battle, id like to have the ability to pick up stone blocks and other reasonable objects that you can throw at enemies causing damage or to use as a distraction. a perk is needed to throw heavier objects.

10. NO full-time followers. only quest related ones. kinda ruins the challenge. also makes inventory pointless since they are your mule.

11. return of spell crafting. one of the best features of previous games.

12. when out of stamina you get knocked to the ground if hit with a melee attack, a acrobatics perk could help against this- 15%chance to not be knocked down when out of stamina, with 3 levels to the perk. also quick attacks effect stamina too like in previous TES.

13. . perhaps the favourites menu could be color coded or split into sub-sections to make it easier to navigate- spells, weapons, shouts and other.

14. third person/first person perspective switch is an option in the menus, freeing up a button on consoles that has a ton of opportunities- a kick button, evade button or a grab button which only works on human enemies. to name a few.

15. mantling. thief had it. system shock 2 had it. and those games are 12+ years old. would be awesome in skyrim, but complicated to implement i assume.

16. NPCs give directions to quest locations, making navigating without objective markers suitable.

17. more secret areas to discover.

18. more verticality to some dungeons. its what made morrowind dungeons extra interesting and adds more opportunities for secret areas.

19. a jumping attack where you slam your weapon downwards. would make for some interesting sneak attacks/assassinations.

20. able to jump mid-sprint

21. if you choose expert or master difficulty at the start of a new game you can not change it mid-game. also an achievement for skrim is- reach level 81 and complete the game on master difficulty.

I've been looking for Bloodlines, but no one has it.

vampire: bloodlines? get it on steam. but then you gotta go through a [censored] ass process of getting it running with steam + patches. if you buy it check the steam forums for a guide to get it running and a link to the patch. well worth it though.

back on skyrim rant- since bethesda went the route of third person deathblow scenes why did they not have awesome player death scenes by monsters? its humanoid enemies only. killed by a spider? 30% chance that the deathblow will activate a death scene where spider takes a paralyzing bite and then proceedes to spin you in a web. for dragon you get eaten alive, chaurus just leeches onto you and so on....

edit: a death scene with a dragon just happened to me. wasn't eaten alive sadly, just chomped on then spat out kinda.

It seemed to work just fine for me on Steam with the latest community patch.

And yes, VTMB is a fantastic game.
