Post » Sat May 12, 2012 6:57 pm

As I install windows xp, it says something like "windwos is preparing to start" and i wait, then it says something like "press enter to continue windows xp install, press R to run windows without xx, or press esc to exit setup" and I press enter but at that point everything freezes and have to restart my computer. what do i do?

probably lacks an important driver or something to do with ahci support...

That's what happens when dealing with an OS over a decade old

Look in your BIOS for anything related to AHCI and change it to something else for starters. Get a non-decade old OS.

Is this your new computer with 8GB of RAM, and a DX11 graphics card? ...Why are you installing Windows XP?

You realize that you will only be able to use about 3GB of that RAM and only DX9 for games going with XP right?

Well... that's not quite accurate. It depends on what version of Windows XP he has as to whether he'll be limited to 3 GB or not.

You probably need some drivers for the hardware then. You'd either have to slipstream them on the disc or load them during the preparation phase of the install (there's a message on the bottom of the screen that says "do something or another to load drivers" and usually requires they be on a floppy or something :yuck: ). Either way it's a big PITA, and is what happens when you use an OS older than a decade.

I get these drivers from the motherboard manufactures website? And could it be a USB drive?

I don't think so. I'm pretty sure the Windows XP install needs them to be on a floppy disk. It doesn't have any way of loading them from a USB drive.

Like I said, this is what happens when you try installing an OS over a decade old, it can't use much of what we currently use.

It's also not just getting them from the website. If they are executable installs, you'd have to extract the sys and inf files from there and put them on a floppy, as the XP installer can't run executables (not until the basic setup is done, at least, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APfyM0uD1gk)

I think what DEFRON is insinuating is: Get a newer OS.

There's virtually no difference between Vista SP2 and Windows 7 performance or behavior-wise (Windows 7 does have some new features though). If you think Vista is all that horrible and like Windows 7, you obviously allowed for confirmation bias to influence your opinion and/or never tried it post-SP1.

That said, You would have to be foolish to put Vista Home Premium on there seeing as how it's EOL is in 4.5 months time. Vista Business, if you have a copy, would be acceptable, though.

My suggestion is, if you want to run an XP machine that badly (there's nothing wrong with it provided you understand it's limitations -- 8GB for the standard 32-bit is way overkill) take it to someone who can get your OS install going. At that point, it's easier to self-diagnose problems.

So I installed Ubuntu, the install goes great, and it says to restart my computer, or 'try it out but nothing will be saved'-something like that... and when i restart my computer, Ubuntu goes into a red screen and sometimes black and i have to shut down my computer. any help?

Just stump up the cash to buy a new OS, it should have been a consideration in your build budget anyway.

Using Ubuntu you're not going to have the greatest gaming experience (I'm assuming this is why you have 8GB of RAM but I don't actually know anything about your build) especially if you're not up to the task of tinkering with stuff to get the things you want to work as you expect.

I have to agree just going out and buying WIndows 7 x64 Home Premium (or Pro if you want support for a few more years) would be a good idea. You can find them on Newegg for ~$100 or $140 respectively. Using Ubuntu, or any Linux distro for games, especially with an AMD card is usually not a good plan. If you are a student, your college may offer programs to get Windows or other Microsoft/Adobe products cheap. Just make sure to get the 64 bit edition.

Yeah, I agree. Windows XP just needs to be retired.

Defron, I envision you as an angry IT guy who's pissed off at everyone's inferior software knowledge.
My week thus far:

1. Removing Windows Antivirus 2012 from a computer

2. Fixing multiple computers for relatives (pro bono)

3. Migrating an Active Directory setup from one subnet to another when virtually all entries in the DNS server were hardcoded (why, I don't know)

4. Setting up 6 PCs for an office after moving there

5. Identifying and fixing dead network cables in a new office

6. setting up 3 laptops

7. preparing for a major upgrade to the main program used in our office, only to have it postponed 5 TIMES!!! :swear:

8. I have to go in to the office tomorrow because of the above

9. I still have 3 computers to fix and one tablet to set up (pro bono family work)

10. I have jury duty next week too... yay...

So yeah, I'm feeling the IT burnout right now, so I'm pretty snippy. I think it's justified, though, personally.
