Trying to a good PC setup

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 9:02 pm

Hey guys! I've decided that my days as a console gamer are starting to dwindle. As I grow up game time becomes limited, in the last year I've only touched Oblivion, Skyrim, and Battlefield 3 with my PS3.

I know that I want to maintain my current setup in terms of my living room, so I'll hook the computer up to a monitor (in place of the TV as we don't use live broadcasts anymore). I'm just looking for some advice really, any good 32 inch monitors (so I can use high resolutions that te PC can handle), and building a PC on a budget.

I've already experimented with programmes such as Xpadder to use a controller as an input method for anything, with great success. So wireless keyboards and mice aren't such an issue, but any advice would be greatly appreciated on anything else.

What budget are you looking around? Also are you looking for 30"+ PC monitors? Or you could just use a TV. TV's 30"+ are 1920x1080 and are fairly cheap. PC monitors 30"+ are usually 2560x1600 and cost well over $1000.

Do you need a keyboard/mouse, speakers or headset?

I'm looking at around £500 for the PC. My current TV does 720p, so it'll do for the moment, but I'd like a fairly good monitor eventually (higher than 1080p). I've already got a surround sound receiver, so a graphics card that outputs audio and video through HDMI would be easiest to set up.

I've got an old mouse and keyboard knocking around, so that will help me get set up. The eventual plan is to use Xpadder with a 360 Joypad and a Chatpad to act as the keyboard and mouse, that way I.don't have bulky equipment littering the place (my girlfriend hates technical clutter).

Bargain shop on ebay. Buy the components separately...always cheaper to build it by yourself. Fry's Electronics (http://www.frys.com/) has some great deals, though I'm not sure what the shipping would be like in regards to cost.

The system I put together is completely NVIDIA, and it absolutely kicks ass on games. It cost me around 800 U.S., which is more than you're looking to spend, but with enough shopping you should be able to get a pretty decent system.

Stay away from retail stores such as Best Buy. You're typically going to get charged at retail more than you would elsewhere.

The PC monitor standard right now is 1080p (1920x1080). Anything more than that you will be paying much more. Upward of £830+ just for the monitor. Alternatively you could do something similar to my setup, 3 1920x1080 screens in Eyefinity (AMD video cards only) for a resolution of 5760x1080 or 1920x3240 depending on how you set them up. Almost all video cards these days output in HDMI or if they don't its DVI, which you can get a cheap converter to HDMI.
