I think what makes it stick out to me is that it's so different from what we're accustomed to, nowadays. It's low polish and finesse, but very big on effort and "heart". Big developers are all about polish and finesse, and not enough about the extra mile and "soul".
One of my favorite 2011 games. The art style is awesome, and the narration is like nothing I've ever seen before. The gameplay is not that great, but it's still fun.
Maybe my favourite game of 2011. Yes, even compared to Portal 2, Deus Ex and Skyrim. It's a bit strange that I like the game so much, considering that
I
don't like the narrator -- I think the story would have been more effective with an "unaffected" voice
I
don't like the graphics -- although the aesthetics are brilliant
The story was just okay -- I really dislike elements of philosophy in games, especially when they're front and centre.
I guess the "heart", general gameplay and style of the game win it for me. I may be biased here, though, because I've been itching to play a modern interpretation of CRPGs, more specifically CJRPGs, and this, I think, is exactly that.
One of my favourite indie games of this year. Love the music, and the presentation of the world/story with the narrator.
The music and storytelling are the best parts of the game. The gameplay is solid, but the music and storytelling elevate what would otherwise be an alright game into something really engaging.
The art and soundtrack of the game is excellent, the story isn't bad but the game was a bit short. I did also get annoyed close to the end whe you get the weapon that makes you move so slow, I left that vague due to spoilers, but I did play through the game a few times already. The narrator also has an awesome voice. Got it during the Steam sale but I think its worth the full price.
I don't know, I think if it had been much longer it would've started getting repetitive. 8 hours for one playthrough with some extra bits of content in a new playthrough was okay with me.
I did think the last two or three locations could have been done differently. And there are a lot of things I'd improve or add upon if I had a say but, as I mentioned, it's a really small indie team, so all things considered they've done an impressive job. The overall plot could have been better, but I did enjoy the way progression in the game and the story is conveyed.
I wonder if a sequel's planned. Hope it sold enough copies. The graphics and gameplay could do with an upgrade and expansion, so I certainly hope so. It deserves a sequel.
