I need an amplifier to use with my 360.

Hiya. I just wanted to ask some advice. I use my 360 on a monitor that has no speakers. I get my sound by plugging the 360 into an old mini system I have. Trouble is the sound quality isn't that great as it's twenty five years old and I'm pretty sure it's on it's last legs. So I want to replace the mini system but I don't want to buy a new one because I don't need CD player, tape deck ect. I don't even need speakers because I use headphones. All I need is an amp with a headphone jack and a volume knob. And since the 360 supports digital optical sound, something with digital optical would be good.

I've contacted a couple of hi fi sound specialist shops and it's "Sorry no, nothing for less that $1200." I was hoping to spend less than a couple of hundred.

So I was wondering what my options are. I don't know anything about amps or this kind of thing, so if I knew what I needed I could just go to a store and ask for it instead of going through the whole preamble.

I tried plugging my headphones directly into the 360 with a little adapter I bought but the sound is too low. So I need something with a volume knob. I know you can get headphones that have them but I don't want to restrict myself to just those headphones.

I'd appreciate any suggestions, thanks.

I have my 360 hooked up to a monitor too, with the red and white component cables plugged into a component to 3.5mm jack, then a female to female 3.5mm jack with headphones plugged into it. A little inelegant, but the volume seems fine to me.

I found this, I think it would work but I think it might be overkill. Plus do I need a graphic equaliser? Note this is in New Zealand dollars.

And it's not digital optical. How important is digital? Does it make that much difference?

If it's your computer monitor you could route the 360 through your sound card and use your PC as a voume control.
