issues running Kotor

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 4:34 pm

I bought Knights of the Old Republic off of steam yesterday and it seemed to work just fine then.

now suddenly the game is crashing constantly, when I booted it up just now the textures were flickering and unstable.

the time before them the game crashed on startup and sent back to my desktop. The icon for the game was still in the task-bar at the bottom of the screen, but I could not bring the screen back up.

is there a reason for this? why is this happening? I've tried messing with the graphic settings so that most of them were at their lowest, but this still doesn't work.

thanks

Just want to point out the obvious here.

its more of an operating system problem then a game producer problem, it was released long before there was even hints of windows vista

I wouldn't call 8 and a half years after the release date "upon release."

Anyway, it is an issue with the OS. I had the same issue, just navigate to the game's folder in Steam and set the .EXE file to run under compatibility mode for XP. Then, even if you start it through Steam, it'll start in compatibility mode.

Try disabling the Steam overlay for the game. It worked for me. The game still randomly minimizes itself during cutscenes once in a while though, and I haven't figured out how to fix that other than disabling them.

thanks, I just deactivated it

yeah, in case of confusion, I am not talking about the new MMO: The Old Republic, I'm talking about the original Knights of the Old Republic that Bioware made back in 2003.

pardon my ignorance here, but how do I access the game's files?
I've lookeed through all of steam and have not been able to actually open the game's files. Do I need to create a set of back-up files for it first?

Computer --> Local disk C --> Program Files --> Steam --> steamapps --> common --> swkotor

I believe he's referring to the icon named swkotor and labeled as application.

That engine seems to have a lot of problems with modern ATI cards especially. I get low framerates with shadows, and if I turn AA on the screen just goes completely black.

I guess I am lucky. Bought it during the holiday sales, and haven't had any issues.

I actually tried the compatability thing, the game would crash upon start-up.

the biggest issue when running on Windows 7 were horrendous graphical errors. the texture were literally falling apart as I moved around. particularly in outdoor areas. Indoor areas were okay for the most part, the occasional messed up wall here, a broken texture there.

when you went outside into a wide open space though, oh man it was a seizure enducing nightmare. the sky in particular would flash uncontrollably, spasm sending geometric lines everywhere, I'd take one step and all the basic wire-frames of the environment would become visible.

it's very hard to explain, but imagine that some of the world was still intact while other parts would flash to colored versions of their wire-frame base.

I don't what to do now, so I uninstalled the game and am reinstalling it, the sheer volume of graphical errors leads me to believe (I hope) that maybe the game didn't install properly, and if nothing else the game might be a little more visually stable. Crashing did go down though, but it happened on occassion.

I also got those screen minimizings upon cutscenes, the section where you're leaving Taris and you have to shoot down sith fighters was a particularly nightmarish part for me since the game would minimize on every cutscene, thankfully enough persistance got me through it.

worst comes to worst, I lose ten dollars :P I'd really rather that not be the case I love Kotor, but it is what it is.

This thread on the Steam Forums might be helpful: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1620666

Apparently disabling Hardware Mouse will solve most of the issues if simply disabling the Steam Overlay doesn't work. Disabling the movies is optional (I don't since the minimizing doesn't bother me enough for me to care).

I'm currently on my first planet in the game and I've been dealing with one annoying problem. More often than not after combat, the character you were controlling becomes unmovable for a short time which forces me either to change characters temporarily until (usually the main) character can move or quicksave and reload. Pretty annoying. Disabling v-sync makes it go away, but the game doesn't like running smoothly without it.

Besides that, the game has been great and I'm playing in Windows 7 Pro.

well uninstalling and reinstalling didn't help, nor did disabling hardware mouse for the graphical issuess

BUT

apparently turning off grass and enabling V-sync did :/ for now anyway, not sure why that's the case, but hey! I barely see the grass anyway so it's not a problem for me :D
