[REQ] Advice on Japanimation filmsseries...

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 12:31 am

Hey peoples. I've never been a specialized fan of anime before, and I don't read manga often either. However, I do end up loving certain anime when the time is right and the planets are aligned.

For instance, as a kid I was pretty obsessed with Record of Lodoss war, and I still own both VHS sets of that. I also got into Naruto a bit, but lost interest after the first 5 or six box sets. The only other animes I've seen are Neon Genesis Evangelion (which I thought had a lot of potential) and Dance in the Vampire Bund (which was almost awesome as well).

Recently, I happened upon Elfen Lied and absolutely loved it. I have been looking for a similar type anime but to no avail.

Basically, I'm searching for something that involves a dynamic plot, great dialogue, contains some mature violence, explores sixuality & nudity, doesn't go over the top with cup size (ala Queens Blade), has less anime screaming and more cicada & cricket background noise, with an overall melancholy tone. I'm not exactly into loli style but not really opposed to it either, so either way on that. Borderline fan service is ok, if it has story to back it up.

<Great advlt anime> <Can I have it?>

Give Berserk a try, it might fit the bill (granted the manga is better than the anime). Also after that give Naruto another spin, it sounds like you hit the filler episodes and that your enjoyment of the series died at that point which comes as no surprise to me, so in fact give the Naruto manga another shot but not the show.

Or perhaps Spice and Wolf or you may like Wolf's Rain (it's a bit weird though, but definitely the dark gloomy type of anime). You may also wish to take a crack at Utawaerumono but again we have a pretty weird anime there.

Not anime (which I don't really care for) but I recently stumbled across some vintage tokusatsu (I had to google the definition), and found it very entertaining for a couple episodes:

http://www.archive.org/details/condolman_01_01

You don't even have to understand Japanese to find it funny.
You can search the keyword 'tokusatsu' there for more episodes.
I thought this might be a good place to finally share this...as I know there might be a few interested, for what it's worth.

[edit] I think it's suppose to be 'Condorman'...but typos in the file names.

This stuff is so bad, it might be good.

Akira
Lain
Now and Then, Here and There
Berserk
martian successor nadesico
Samurai X
Speed Grapher

Wow, after Google Imaging all of those do look pretty interesting. Berserk looks like it's about the Berserker from Record of Lodoss War. Akira... all I found were thousands of pictures of his motorcycle so idk lol. Could you elaborate on which have what features that I'm looking for? They all look pretty good, just want to be sure.

Spice and Wolf is tv14 so I'm sure I'll find it lacking, though it plagues me everywhere I turn. Wolf Rain looks like My Little Wolfie or something lol, but still interesting. Utawaerumono looks pretty good. Naruto I think just ended up pissing me off because it wasn't that advlt. I loved the fighting and the depth in the dialogue, but it was lacking in other areas and Ino was my favorite and she wasn't in the show much.

The basic synopsis of Akira is...well complicated. We have the city of Neo-Tokyo, built over the ruins of Tokyo after its destruction several decades prior, has fallen to the usual suspects of decay; corrupt government officials, brutal police, rise in criminal activity, and general crapsack worldery. Amidst all this, Tetsuo, a juvenile delinquent who runs with a motorcycle gang, develops bizarre psionic powers that are believed to have been the cause of Tokyo's destruction...and does probably what you would expect your typical angry, insecure teenager would do.

That doesn't really do it any justice. It's a great anime film and an even better manga. There are no clear-cut good or bad guys, it's dark and violent, but not overly so, and is a nice blend of dystopia, cyberpunk, urban fantasy and (in the manga) post-apocalyptia.

I also whole-heartedly recommend Berserk. It has just about everything in your OP ("a dynamic plot, great dialogue, contains some mature violence, explores sixuality & nudity, doesn't go over the top with cup size, has less anime screaming and more cicada & cricket background noise, with an overall melancholy tone"). The full TV series is available really cheap, the even better manga is still a work-in-progress that goes well beyond what the former covers. And a http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGMOS3YDCSE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHDVGT2AD5Y is set to be released in Japan next month that will most definitely be imported to the west eventually.

Hmm, you know it doesn't need a mature rating to have a mature story right? It's kinda silly to limit yourself so much...

Anyway, you could try something like http://www.anhymanwsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=6592 or http://www.anhymanwsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=6134.

Normally I would agree with you, but when it comes to anime, there's only so much I can take. There is a fine line between amazing and annoying for me, so I'm looking for that "perfect anime" which is what Elfen Lied was for me.

Edit: Could you give me a synopsis of the two in your own words?

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. It's pretty much one of the best movies ever, let alone an anime. So take that as you will. What you enter into a search engine, is what comes out of a search engine.

I'm confused, do you think everything with a lower rating is less mature like Naruto or something? That's not always the case.

Nope, writing is not one of my strong points. Another anime that tackles some mature themes rather well is Welcome to the NHK, but on a psychological level instead of a violent level.

If you like that movie (like I do) I'd suggest checking out Princess Mononoke & Spirited Away

This looks like something my brother would like. I might watch it with him. Thanks.

This looks like Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke. I didn't really get into those at all. Not sure my assumption is accurate but it looks a great deal similar.

No, I just am looking for something specific as opposed to just "a good anime". I was hoping I could narrow it down by explaining what I was looking for. Spice and Wolf doesn't seem to be it. Looks more like a tease without much follow up, and I'm not one to sift through hours of anime without freaking out unless it's up my ally. I could be wrong, but I'm not sure.

Outlaw Star looks pretty awesome. Blue Submarine No. 6 looks disturbing. What does it entail?

The tree has to grow its roots so it can grow tall and mighty.

And your correct, its of a smilar style. I've only seen Spirited Away of those two though.

Mankind's struggle against a crazed scientist and his army of human-animal hybrids. It's not particularly violent or anything, but it's still really interesting (my little description doesn't do it justice).

One reason they are so similar is that they were made by the same company, Studio Gibli
