Superhero RPG

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 10:19 pm

Who would like to see a Superhero RPG made like the Elder Scrolls or Fall Out Series games? I know I sure would.

Why has this genre of gaming been so overlooked? I have always wanted to play a really good Super hero RPG on my computer since I played my first PnP game of Champions so long ago.

In recent years, there have been several MMO's in this area but I have fond them lacking. I'd much rather play a single player game Like Fall Out or The Elder Scrolls with their wide open world and nonlinear play style.

I played that awful awful MMO years ago with the superheroes and supervillains. I also believe those people were responsible for making the really bad star trek online game as well. I see a trend forming with that company.

Batman: AA, and Batman: AC are both open-world. Not neccesarilly Bethesda RPG type stuff. It's basically an open world action game, but it has some good character progression and the stories are well written. And besides, it's Batman!

No need to be cryptic about it. Who do you mean? I played both and was also disappointed by them.

I don't know what AA you're talking about, but the one I played was as much an RPG as Prototype, less open-world than a Bioware game and not even a particularly good action game.

I didn't say it was an RPG. I just said it had character progression, so that may be a substitute for him. He wants an open world, single player superhero game, and that's what I gave him. And AA may have been more linear than what he wants, but AC seems to be entirely open-world. I couldn't think of something that fit what he wanted exactly, so I gave him something closer to it.

Also, that last bit is just opinion.

I've only played the AA demo. It was good but not what I want.

I want a game where we start from scratch with just basic stats and a couple of powers/abilities and level up to awesomeness. There coud be a perk tree that lets the player chose skills or enhancements.

I liked the way character creation worked in the PnP version of Champions. The player is given 200-250 points to buy stats, powers and skills. To get extra points they could buy disadvantages.

Disadvantages could range from minor to the extreme. I had an electrical based hero in a game. He was not a big fan of water. It really messed him up. Hi powers were also activated with a 15% failure rate.

As the player gained EXP,, the disadvantages can be bought off or existing powers can be improved. The Champions MMO had none of this and was also a major disappointment for me.

I liked Prototype. It had a lot going for it but I'd not call him a Superhero but it's on the right track in many ways.

God, I've wanted a game like this for ages aswell, the closest I've gotten to such a game is either Prototype, or SR3 when you are fully upgraded, but it's not exactly what I want.

I'd love a game like this, where you can customise your outfit and powers.

There is a lot of potential for replability as well, for example choosing to be a vigalante or working with the law as two "factions".

There is a great deal of potential replay in a game like this. Each time a different set of powers are used, the game would feel different.

For example try playing Oblivion or Skyrim as a straight up warrior using no magic. It's a lot different when you play without spells.

If anyone could make a game like this, it's Bethesda. It'd be buggy as hell but still keep you up late playing it. :)

I was going to say that AA wasn't very "open worldy" but more of a "Linear world with some short-cuts". I did enjoy AA though.

I've actually got a design document started for an open world super-hero action RPG along the lines of Elder Scrolls/Fallout. It's an obvious opportunity. I'm surprised there aren't games like this already, though I guess there aren't a lot of companies that really do stuff like this. Everyone is too focused on cash-mongering MMOs. The ugly uniforms are free, though, so it's all good.

@JargarTharn12: And let's not forget the criminal faction. I always wanted to be an evil genius. I could have a whole button devoted to an 'evil laugh' and just spam the hero with it.

There should be times where you walk around as a regular guy, and try to hide your secret identity.
It's just part of the entire superhero feeling IMO.

Definitely. That's in my design document already. One of the first things I thought of, actually.

How would you (anyone) do the combat? There would be a huge difference between playing a Batman-style character and playing a character like Superman (to use obvious examples). Would you just design the game around a certain power level (low, gadget-based vigilantes vs. uber-powered super-heroes) or try to design a game that encompassed the whole range?

Anybody else have features they'd like to see in a game like this? Maybe five years from now I'll be making one.

Designing a game like this is an enormous task.

Secret IDs should be an option. Not all superheroes us them. In this day and age it would be very difficult to maintain a secret ID. If a player want one, it should be a major disadvantage and therefore allow them extra 'points' in the 'power/skill' pool.

Setting is a major factor as well. Will the game take place in one massive city or spread out all over the world? I'd like to see it spread out like Fallout or Oblivion. There could be various Law Enforcement agencies and governmental agencies working for or against our hero .

Just like the other games I mentioned, the player has the choice to be a hero or villain or some mix of both. They could play as a hero out for glory and doing the right thing, a cold hearted merc looking for cash or just a nut case bent on world domination.

I'd like to build my character to be just about what ever I wanted from a techno genius to an undead vampire.

I just wonder why no one has made a game like this for the single player market?

I'd love for Volition to make a superhero RPG in the Saints Row 3 engine. I spend half my time running around dressed as a superhero anyway.
