Networking Question

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 12:42 am

I have a question for anyone with networking experience, specifically with configuring CISCO routers. Is there any way to enable bit notation for subnet masks when configuring interfaces or just in general? I've searched a little bit over the past few months when I think about it, but I've yet to find anything on it. My teacher swears that there is and I have a friend who said he's come across some CISCO routers that did. If anyone has any insight, it'd be awesome if you could share. ^.^

You can configure subnets using the prefix/length notation, if thats what you're asking.
AFAIK the subnet mask is usually displayed as /24 or whatever in most places in the ios anyway.

I don't need a guide to understand bit notation, I was asking if there was a way to enable the usage of it while configuring routers. "ip address 10.0.0.1/30" is a lot easier to type than "ip address 10.0.0.1 255.255.255.252".

I've not seen bit notation represented in the ios. The router's I'm using are fairly recent, even. Configuring something with "ip address 10.0.0.1/30" would return a syntax error.

Sorry for directing you to the guide - my last suggestion would be for you to post the question on a Cisco forum.

Maybe it was only IPv6 that lets you use the prefix length, oh well, man up, you'll get used to it.

Otherwise, if you're assigning lots of IP addresses, you could use DHCP instead if you're worried about typing them all out.
