Information security resources and projects

I am nearing my graduation date for my undergraduate degree which is based around server administration and IT management. My school did have an information security but when I tranferred here I already had a couple of years and had switched majors so this path is the way to just get done. I really want to be in the IT security field but I feel like I am a bit behind. Also when I was looking at programs the security program here did not appeal to me due to the path.

After I graduate I will probably take a year off and then attempt to get into a masters program for the field of study I want to be in. But until then I need to gain more knowledge and I learn hands on. Since I am graduating soon internships may end up out of the question, I am going to talk to my current employer about pairing me with someone where I can learn from and I already have some equipment to play around with, but I am looking for more.

Is anyone in this field or have experiences they could share or books that might be worth looking into. Before the end of this semester I plan to havemy CompTIA Security+ exam and then over the summer potentially get some Microsoft administrator certifications so I have a more in depth understanding of the platforms and technologies. I do plan to speak to some instructors here on campus but I am looking for outside input as well.
