Neophyte looking for some advice

So, I just got Skyrim the day I was told I wouldn't be leaving the house for about a week due to a ripping case of pneumonia. I'm blaming my unsuccessful searches on the crap the Dr. gave me zonking me out, also my effected mental state seems to make me think the learning curve is higher than it really is.

I am level 4 now, just did the whole dragon claw thing and think I will be lugging that heavy dragonstone around till I get a house.

My question is this, when should I start to care about smithing, alchemy, or enchanting? I figure smithing will be my route and I have little or no desire in PLing it. Next is there anything I could do that could seriously gimp me in the future or kill this char for me? I am shield and axe and would like to stay that way, unless duel wield is really viable. I intend to have a vast majority of point spread across 1 handers, block, smithing, and some restoration. I feel pretty stupid for asking, but any advice would be greatly appreciated.
