Have a strange problem with my computer.

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 9:28 am

(I have Win7 Home Premium 64-bit btw)Whenever when I start-up my pc, I'll go to the the tray, and when I right click on AVG, "Open AVG User Interface" is greyed out sometimes(and AVG is completely disabled), and when it's greyed out, there out other problems on my pc as well, I can open malware bytes, but when I start a scan with it, it always crashes, another problem is whenever I move/delete a folder/file, I always have to refresh in order for the the change to apply, another problem is that my pc is noticably slower, and the final problem(that I noticed) was that if I shut off or restarted my computer, it will be on the "Shutting down" screen for around 2 minutes before finally turning off(and normally when all these problems aren't happening it's on the shutoff screen for less than 10 seconds). This has been going on for the past few weeks, and happens randomly. When it first happened, I went into safe mode and scanned with AVG, it found nothing, but for some reason going into safe mode always fixes the problems(for the next startup).

Does anyone know what the heck is going on with my pc?

No I don't know but you have something going on that probably started just before you noticed it running slower - a program you installed within the 'past few weeks ' period. Your computer may have been invaded by spyware that's using your system.

I use CCleaner and dump all Internet crap and clean out memory etc at least once a day.
I use it's registry scanner and delete every item it brings up on a scan.
I also use task manager every time I start the computer and a few times during use to "End Process Tree" on many of the processors running.
I never allow any program to Auto update including (especially) windows, antivirus, firewalls etc. any program that wants to use my computer for it's own purpose I consider a threat - one of the reasons (because of my paranoia) I have stopped loading Skyrim as I refuse to hand my personal information over to Steam and allow their unfettered access to my computer.
I find doing all this keeps my computer more like I want it to be and that I have some control over it and have fewer problems than when I didn't.

Looks like I'm pretty much screwed. I tried going into safe mode, doing virus scans(in safe mode), restarting my pc, unstalled a few programs I didn't need, even tried unistalling AVG but it gets stuck halfway and and after few minutes says there was some sort of error(internal) unistalling it. Seems the problem(s) is now permanent.

EDIT: This makes ABSOLUTELY no sense what so ever, I get a funny idea, "I'll take the movie out of the drive, maybe that'll do something(it "Fixed" the problem last time) and now everything is back to normal(for now).

Sounds a bit stupid but check what time your computer is set to, I had all sorts of problems after a crash which changed my time (unfortunately all my steam games uninstalled as a result).

Not to be the guy who screams "fire!" in the theater, but maybe you have a rootkit and it's crappy so it's screwing up your OS. If safe mode didn't work, and anti-malware programs are apparently being targeted, and the OS is behaving weird, I think it's a distinct possibility. If this is true, you can download and run a rootkit detector, but even those don't work all the time. Reinstalling Windows may be your only option.

Vista and 7 use the same "core" operating system idea. Vista is Windows NT 6.0 and Windows 7 is Windows NT 6.1 after all, however Windows 7 is much improved. Can you say that Windows 2000 (NT 5.0) and Windows XP x86 (NT 5.1) are exactly the same? No, but they are similar in many areas. Windows XP is much improved over Windows 2000 and you can draw many connections in the relationship between Vista and Windows 7.

Windows 8 (NT 6.2) will most likely share many features from Vista/7.

@OP. 8GB is plenty... Did the DVD install any third party application and/or codec?

Windows 7 and Vista share a lot of the same code. That said, there are all kinds of things wrong with your statement here. I'm not going to bother getting into it, though.

8 gig is good, i know alot of people who are having lots of problem with 4 gig of ram running windows 7. Im not getting into an arguement about windows 7 on here, its about trying to answer the question of the person, who started the thread, thats for another thread.

Also is your pc a pre made or did you get it made to your specs. My sister just got a laptop, win 7 64 bit, 4 gig ram ran like a snail, still testing at the moment, got an idea what the problems are , just need to confirm it. But her anti virus wont load on startup either, even though its enabled, have to go though the whole process during each startup/reboot to start it, its mcafees.

if it's this bad then chances are that any fix won't make your operating system run like it should again, so going through with a clean install if you know how would be a good idea

One thing my tech always and a freind who's had lots of bugs with computers and its basically nearly always turned out to be the same thing, one of the simple things is if its running slow you might have bad ram, bad ram can also cause lots of other little glitches you may not think it can cause but it does, so worth getting that loooked at if its bad stick, then its easily replaced, alot of times its worth going through the processes so if you get anything next time, it just not auto reinstall windows, because you could end up doing that for a long time.

Weird. I have 3 machines running Win7 x64. One has 8GB of RAM, one has 4GB, and one is an older machine with 2GB. Win7 runs great on all three of them. In fact, it runs better than XP ever did...even on the older machine. The customer service department at our office is full of mahines running Win7 on 1-2GB of RAM and they all run fine.

Also is your pc a pre made or did you get it made to your specs. My sister just got a laptop, win 7 64 bit, 4 gig ram ran like a snail, still testing at the moment, got an idea what the problems are , just need to confirm it. The problem with most laptops is slow hard drives. As the registry and other things that are accessed a lot get bigger they tend to get really slow due to pokey disk I/O. McAfee will only make this worse. Their on-access scan methodology is pretty heavy.

If the OP is having memory issues that's easy to test. You can download one of many boot discs that have diagnostic utilities on them (like http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/) and run Memtest86+ from the boot CD. Let it run over night and see if you get any errors. If the problem is a hardware issue at all it could be anything from heat to a bad HDD cable...there are a lot of possibilities. To me it sounds like a malware issue, though.

(Sorry for the late reply)

It seems the problem is definitely caused by leaving a movie in the cd drive(which I don't understand) because I haven't had the problems since I took out the DVD, and I realized that the first time I had the problem, safe mode actually didn't do anything, it fixed it because I took out the DVD while I was in safe mode...

(and what I mean by leaving the DVD in the drive, I mean having the DVD in the drive before powering on the pc)

Does putting the DVD back in screw everything up again? You should be sure before you say everything is fine.

Putting a DVD in is fine, but leaving it in, turning off my pc then powering it back up while the DVD is still in seems to mess everything up.

EDIT: oh and I'm pretty sure any movie does this, because it's happened with different movies.

One other thing to check is the load order - I suppose it could screw up something if it tries to boot from the DVD before the Hard Drive.... mine has in Vista 7
