Someone please explain this to me....

Why is it that when you buy certain things that require an internet connection; in this case Leap Frog Tag Junior books and reader for my daughter you are told to go to their Support Site to download the software so you can install the audio for the particular books you have.

It takes a few minutes to download this exe file then when you click on it it opens another program that downloads the program you actually need.

WTH is the point of this? I downloaded a program that allows me to download the program I intended to download in the first place? This makes no sense to me. Seems kind of counter-productive and non-intuitive to me. What was wrong with going to the support site and downloaded the correct program in the first place? Especially since I still have to install this new program once it's done downloading only to have to download the audio for the two new books she was given by my brother for her birthday yesterday [this was a run-on sentence..cool]. I understand they can't preload all the audio books in their library on the reader device, but they still could have made it so you could just go to their website pick the book you wish to download the audio for and click on install. Just doesn't make sense.

I've noticed this trend a lot and fidn it more annoying now that I don't have a stable internet connection now. I shut my high speed off and have been using my Android phone tethered to my PC. I have spotty 3g service as it is and 90% of the time it drops to 1x service where I live. So, it takes forever to download things. It took me two days to download the 1.4 patch for Skyrim on a tether.

Some form of copy-protection maybe? Having to download one application to download the files you need gives the creator of the software more control.

The point is that it takes more time to download, and takes up more of the limited space you have on your system. Also, the more crap you have to download, the easier it is to hide spyware among it.

That's what I thought too. I also am irritated that it gave no option for install. It's probably installing it to my games hard drive, which is a faster drive than the one my os is on. I would've rather it go on the drive with the OS since that's where I generally install stupid stuff.

LOL well, there's just no reason for it to download two programs to install and use one.

They do this because

a ) (they think) it protects against piracy; (it doesn't)
b ) depending on what publisher they use and which manufacturers, they might be lowering their production costs by including so little with their product; and/or
c ) they're a subsidiary of one of the big, bad digital content companies that are trying to change the consumer/producer entertainment model; they are trying to move us away from a model in which we "own" (a license, but practically if not legally, we do "own") physical copies of their products, to one where we pay them for the privilege of consuming their media via a portal they designate -- much like how TV shows used to be exclusive to television, and you had to sit through all the annoying advertisemants and pay X or Y if you wanted a premium package. This is one step in that process; and/or
d) they're dumb.

I'm going to roll with "All of the Above" but I'll add more after 'D' and go with 'E' 'F' 'G' as 'They're Dumb'.
