Why can't I hate X without being told it's because it's popu

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 10:01 pm

You might hate X but it has strong supporters. Particularly in the algebra and porm communities. And Vin Diesel.

Anyway, some people sometimes just want to go along with the crowd on popular subjects. Or sometimes things might be popular for good reason.

The argument that you are a mainstream hater is quite thin and mind-boggling. Unless you have a universal hatred for everything that is popular, it cannot be used as an explanation / argument.

Why not just mention the reason and avoid the accusations altogether?

it could be the reason may not be "enough" for the "other" side to understand

Something that always bothers me in a lot of discussions, particularly video games, is this argument. Say somebody started a "Do you like X thread?", well I don't like X so I'll post just that, but then people who like X try to tell me I don't like it because it's popular and I want to be different, that's not why, if I dislike something it's because I have a good reason for it. It's not even just kiddies on forums that use this argument either, very respectable members on our own forum have used it many times, and my question is why? Why is the immediate response to somebody disliking something a majority likes almost always, "because it's popular".
People in general just don't understand that people are different. We don't all like the same food, the same fashion, the same art, the same books, movies, games...anything. Folks assume that because they like what they like that their tastes are better, wiser, more informed, better honed, smarter,...whatever than the next guys. It's difficult for someone to except why anyone would not see things their way.

So it's best just to enjoy what you like and not worry about what others like. Should you want to debate about it with those who see differently, try to ensure you are properly prepared and have valid arguments and facts to back it up and to do so in a way that you still show respect to those representing the other side. Otherwise, your voice will be ignored.

Most important is summed up nicely in LostInSpace's post below.
A more interesting question is, why do you care ?

*shrug* Just lay back, talk when it's enjoyable to, and quit when you see you won't get through. Better than re-hashing what you've said over and over, hoping to find a way to rephrase things that'll fit someone's narrow window of attention.

My problem is not the popularity of games, but games that try to be popular and by doing so, alienate its fan base and becomes a watered down, generic experience IE Skyrim. A game that can hold someone in for thousands of hours is reduced to a mere few hundred. Same could be said for the Call of Duty's. I could normally put in over 20+ days into it, now I struggle putting in 6 days. Then people try to use the argument" You've put in 250 hours into Skyrim!!! Quit [censored]ing you got your moneys worth!" I hate that argument so very much.

Wow, this post summed in my thoughts on the matter completely.

Seriously, THIS.

Indeed. Can't a man dislike pop without getting crap about it?

P.S. Why does every thread on this board remotely related to games always end up as a "why Skyrim svcks" thread?

I can relate to the OP, especially when it comes to creepbook...er...I mean Facebook. I find people and creepbo...wait Facebook to be annoying. I dislike creep...damn, did it again... Facebook and just can't seem to grasp the appeal of it. But then again, I'm anti-social and have no use to use for creep...er..Facebook whatsoever.
This is what http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gHC3geiU5w is to me.

I don't hate things because they are popular, I hate the fact that they are popular.

For example I hate that Justin Bieber is so popular when there are hundreds of amazing musicians who struggle to make a living with their music. I've got nothing against Justin Bieber or his music... it's just his popularity I have a problem with.
