newbie questions

Hi

New to this game and with several questions.

1. What is the point in using light armor? No class benefits from using light vs heavy armor. There is no evading or similar perks that benefit from armor. Only mages have one perk which benefits from NO armor at all. Thieves don't appear to gain anything from it as well.
So when and how is light armor better choice than heavy armor?

2. I have Elven war axe and orcish armor. I was able to improve them once, but my "Elven armor" and "Orcish armor" perks state that I would be able to improve them TWICE as much. So when will I be able to improve them a second time? What perk do I have to have or what level should I be to be able to do that?

Not sure on the first, but I assume that when it says you can improve it twice as much it means you can increase it once, but the effect is twice as powerful. So if before the perk you increased an item 5%, with the perk it would be 10%. Not that these are actual numbers on my part

When you get higher in Light Armor, then it becomes weightless when it is worn, leaving you more room to loot - also, you move faster in Light than Heavy - it even tells you on loading screens that Heavy Weapons and Heavy Armor makes you move slower - As a thief, with sneak and light armor perks, you can hide in the shadows in front of them - i have killed at point blank in light with sneak and one handed - I am just saying - something to consider

What is the perk for no armor? I am a mostly mage, but I still wear boots, gloves/gauntlets/bracers. If I take all of these off, I get a perk? I do like the light armor because I can enchant it to help my mage out... without bogging him down.

Regarding the Light vs. Heavy armour question:

Merits of Light:
  • Faster Stamina Regen than Heavy
  • Perks to make it silent (thus not messing with stealth)
  • Perk to allow 10% chance of dodging all melee damage (final perk)
  • Does not slow movement
  • Weighs less, with perks nothing, freeing up inventory

Merits of Heavy:
  • Better defence than light armour
  • Can be perked to eliminate movement penalty and extra weight, though these are mitigations more than merits. Just thought heavy armour was being undervalued with just one point here.

Regarding no Armour...

Merits:
  • Allows free movement and stamina regen without perk point investment
  • Can be enchanted to maximise magic performance
  • Silent
  • Allows 'mage armour' perk to work

I don't think this is an exclusive list, but you get the idea. When and how is what best?

No Armour: Mage who avoids taking hits and wants to maximise damage output (using magic)
Light Armour: For Ranger-types, stealth-based characters, those who will put themselves in harm way but generally avoid the fray.
Heavy Armour: For those who want to survive the midst of the brawl.
