What on EARTH?

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 8:52 am

I was running through Whiterun earlier when a random NPC mentioned "What on Earth was that?". If I remmber correctly according to the lore, TES takes place on a planet called Norn? So what, was someone not paying attention to this while they were making the game? This game needs to go straight to trasscan?

Could've been referring to actual earth, as in dirt. Also, Nirn*. Feel free to overreact and throw it in the trash can though.

Earth is a term that can refer to the ground, or dirt. So its not all that abnormal.

If you think this is an appropriate reaction, then you probably should.

Yea but would have been better if the NPC said, "What on Norn was that?" Still sounds like a great game though!

haha, didn't notice that. Yeah agree saying something like "what the oblivion is that" sounds more fitting.

The problem, of course, is that "earth" not capitalized refers to solid land, basically, whereas "Earth" with a capital E is actually a proper name indicating our planet. So I guess the meaning in said situation should be determined by whether it's capitalized or not. Any planet with solid land mass can have "earth", but there is only one "Earth".

Didn't people in OBlivion say something like that? Something like, "What in oblivion was that?"

I would think we all have. Tullius says it in the intro.

Even if they did mean Earth as in the planet, it's just a simple mistake. Since we...you know..live on Earth, we get used to saying it.

Any planet is essentially called an earth, just as any sun can be called a sun, because of our dumb vague names it can mean more then one thing. This was back when we thought there was only one earth and sun, of course we where far from right lol

What on Terra is this!?

It doesn't matter one bit to me if they call Nirn for terra or tellus or earth or roflmfao.

Yeah I heard this, and I was like "huh?". Though it could be said that he meant "earth" as in the ground they're standing on, but that's a stretch.
