Judging by Oblivion, how serious is Bethesda about patching

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 10:06 pm

I present to you Oblivion's Trespass Counter. I don't actually present it to you, but I want you to imagine it. I actually first bought Oblivion with all it's expansions on the PC, then bought the whole thing for the Xbox360, then again for the PC when it came out on Steam. These purchases were years apart from each other. One consistent thing I remember is the Trespass Counter always being 0...on all versions.

This is a glaring error because it presents itself in your stats menu. It was never fixed for the 360, but through an unofficial patch created by some fan, it was corrected for the PC.

The point here is that Bethesda just let it go. Didn't bother. Figured...ah well, we did enough.

So how much can we expect from them on Skyrim. I'll be honest. Skyrim is pretty much the greatest game ever, but it seems like there are a million little bugs, albeit most not gamebreaking, that I just fear will never actually even be looked at by Bethesda.

What do you think?

They didn't bother fixing it because it was a pointless nonissue. They spent their time fixing, you know, actual bugs.

They've already put one out and are working on another.

The problem is at some point, they have to stop working on an old project. Additionally, if they were to patch the game Oblivion today to remove all remaining bugs, nearly all the hard work that modders put into the game would be wasted. I think fixing the console versions would be ok, but to release a patch on PC at this point would not work out so well.

Oblivion never made it past 1.2.

Skyrim is already 1.1.

Food for thought.

Fallout 3 made it to 1.7.

Desert for thought. :disguise:

They will patch any bugs that break the overall game. Though I can imagine smaller bugs that are not really that much of an issue in regards to the game as a whole, they may not get fixed.

And lets keep in mind, that in order to completely fix any bugs in the game, they would have to test if your years. Sandbox games are not easy to bug test.

I hope they patch the size of the actual hitbox of that "one big dragon boss guy" ... You swing at him but hear no sounds, and the fire breath comes fron behind his actual head, as if he was smaller

In a business point of view, it cost the company to pay the salary of game artists and programmers.

If the game will no longer bring in more income, it makes no sense to put the workforce into the project.

Of course keeping their fans happy will make ensure sales of their titles. A good way to deter piracy too.

Its their choice whichever is more profitable.

We should understand their stand as much as they should understand ours.
