so a few weeks back I bought KotOR (not The Old Republic MMO) off of steam.

it ultimately didn't pan out as the game ran horribly on my rig. I have a pretty good computer so it was surprising that it ran so poorly. I guess the game is not optomized for modern systems.

My question is:
I've been contemplating getting either Jedi Outcast or Jedi Academy

1) for people who have modern computers, does Jedi Outcast or Jedi Academy run decently? or does it suffer from the same freezing and egregious graphical hiccups as KotOR?

2) if it does still work, are the game's servers still active or are they shut down? if they are active, is the online community strong enough for either game to warrant a purchase?

I loved both games on the X-box, but the main feature for me now would be the online duels, and if those are gone then it's not worth buying.

If you got them off steam, it should run well. I don't know what magic they do but 99% of steam games work perfect for me.

Jedi Academy is great game. Haven't played outcast yet.

are the online servers still up though? Yes, Academy and Outcast (you should relaly play it) have fantastic single players.

I'm betting the official servers are down, but I believe the JK series had dedicated servers and hosting games on your own machine as well.

Nope, it's SP/MP

The MP is awesome. Though, the balance is basically non-existent, it's still really fun.

Haven't tested with windows 7, but Outcast/academy always ran well on the same XP rig I played such games as skyrim on.
Jedi Academy still has a healthy multiplayer community, though I can't guarantee you'll like the "culture" of many of the servers. (namely, their odd habit of having force powers shut off in a game about playing a jedi)

I can't speak for Jedi outcast, as I haven't played it in years.

back when I played J:A on the X-Box just before the original servers went down people had this cultural rule of no force powers too. Supposedly a "truly skilled J:A" player doesn't need force powers, strictly lightsaber combat only.

on the flip side there were matches where force powers were allowed and everyone used force lightning on each other.

Before giving up on KotOR, you should look up some fixes; many games that don't run well on modern computers can still be made to work. KotOR, for example, tends to choke on multi-core processors. If you have one, you can disable the extras by starting up the game (don't go past the menu), minimizing it, selecting it in the processes tab of the task manager, and choosing "set affinity". You can uncheck boxes for all but one of the cores from there.

Unless you've already tried that/don't have a multi-core processor, in which case ignore me.

On the servers with force powers, while you do get lightning users, you're just as likely to get light-siders, chokers, and saber combat. though Really, it seems that capture the flag maps are the only ones to feature force powers.
