I honestly didn't know that anybody still used MSN. Everybody that I know stopped useing MSN about four years ago.

Aww, come on now. You know that the only reason that there's nothing really wrong with XP. Even nowadays. It's still perfectly viable for most things. Except MSN, apparently.

Eh just ignore stuff like that.

Anyway to the OP, don't feel bad. I have zero messengers on my computer. I have a steam ID but there's no point in putting it in my profile, either.

If you have google chrome, there's an MSN extension that might suit your needs.

OP - Google for Windows Live 2009. I have XP and that's the one I use and it's fine.

As for third party - I use aMSN on Ubuntu but in recent times it has come up with an issue - if I log into my hotmail first, then want to chat later, it won't let me log in with aMSN - it boots me saying "disconnected. Logged in at another location". I think this was the same for the Windows version of aMSN. But I don't know how many people have this problem.
I have also had problems with webcam between aMSN and users who have Windows Live, but not always. Also, file sharing isn't supported. But nonetheless, aMSN is a decent substitute for Windows Live.

Pidgin is also nice but mine doesn't support custom smileys any more for some bizarre reason (i.e. they turn up "invisible" or as grey boxes). And no webcam I believe. But great just for chatting.
Both aMSN and emesene support file transfer, sometimes the file transfer is even very fast (under certain conditions, like when Jupiter is in retrograde). Never experienced what you have with either of them, but I use them infrequently (preferring Pidgin) and don't actually use the accounts associated with them for anything else.

Oh man, if Pidgin didn't support custom emoticons I'd be very, very sad :(

Ah, I meant the image sharing thing that Windows Live has, not the file transfer.. where it just appears in the chat window, can't remember what it's called :P
Pidgin and custom smileys used to work fine for me, then it just stopped working out of the blue :( I don't use it that often though, only when aMSN does that disconnected thing on me.
