Creating a simple website

So, some (tiny) amount of people may recall that in the days before Skyrim, I made some suggestions in the suggestions-for-future-games threads. A whole lot of gigantic suggestions, actually, which I decided to keep for future reference in a 200-page text file. With Skyrim come and gone and the next wave of suggestion threads starting, I've been getting it into my head to get involved in that again, but this text file is well past what I would call obnoxious. I get a new, better idea and suddenly have to deal with finding every reference to the previous suggestion to update them.

A giant text file is rather lackluster when it comes to both organization and sharing, so I find myself wanting a better medium with which people can ignore my ideas. A webpage format, something basic with a list of categories on the left that link to the window on the right, would make the info easier to manage, update, and share. Problem is, I have no idea what's involved in this process. I haven't even glanced in the direction of website creation since the heyday of everyone hosting their terrible fansites with black background and blue text on Geocities. I have absolutely no art skills or software, and no knowledge of HTML, so we're off to a great start.

Is there a buffoon-friendly way I can put this together, or is it best I just go back to typing on forums in my safety mittens? I'm not looking to create any sort of high-traffic masterpiece, just some words people can read without turning to stone.

You could possibly try making a tumblr or blog page. I'm completely ignorant when it comes to Tumblr mind you, so I might be talking nonsense.

I'd definitely suggest Wordpress. You can host it for free on http://wordpress.com.

Set up each of your categories as a page. You can even nest one page within another so that the sidebar, with all the links, has dropdown menus when appropriate. And if ever you want to link from one page to another that already exists, all you have to do is select the text to link in the editor and press the link button then choose the other page.

Alternatively, you might go with a wiki-style format. I've used, and enjoyed, http://pbwiki.com as a free, hosted option for that. Also recommended Edit: apparently they're out of business. Perhaps try http://www.wikispaces.com/ instead, though I have no experience with them.

If you want a website in the traditional sense, you could try http://weebly.com. Like both of the above, it has a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor to make things easier on buffoons, but it might not serve you as well in this particular case.

Tumblr's really easy and looks great, but has less functionality than Blogger or Wordpress I think.

I don't suppose you could link any Wordpress sites that do this, as an example? The pages I looked at just seemed to be blogs, which isn't really what I'm looking for.

Here's a list of 10: http://blogsessive.com/blogging-tools/10-beautiful-wordpress-websites/

Really, I'd argue it's almost more common to see Wordpress (at least the downloaded, self-hosted version) as a CMS behind a website, rather than just as a blog. But even just hosting on wordpress.com you can do about the same. Often the implementation is so smooth you can't even tell Wordpress is behind it all.

I've tried a few other CMS while trying to put up websites of my own, and software like Joomla and Drupal, while still somewhat easy, aren't near as intuitive as Wordpress for me. But that's a discussion for another day because those are more for paid hosting.

Wordpress is nice, but harder to manage in website-style (I tried, found it a bit fiddly, think I couldn't get new posts onto the other pages except for the main one or something). I have a Weebly too which I found easy enough to set up and have a wordpress blog linked from there. You can make categories on Wordpress which will then link you to all the posts in that category, but the main blog page will have them all in chronological order. Weebly is like a standard webpage, pages/categories across the top.
