The fact there's factions at all is depressing. Ever since WoW introduced the idea of being a part of a pre-defined faction, with pre-defined opinions and goals, EVERYONE is copying them.
Intelligent MMOs used to give players the tools to create their own factions and allegiances, war for territories and castles/strongholds, tax the surrounding lands, etc. Why are developers so opposed to giving us tools like that again? Give us the tools to create our own factions and political wars, and it WILL happen. It will also lead to a rich and storied history created by the players. Look at EVE Online's history of conflicts.
EXAMPLE: In Skyrim we have the Empire and the Stormcloaks. Now you might think "The Empire almost lopped my head off, and the Stormcloaks endorse racism. I don't like either of them." An MMO with pre-defined factions doesn't care what you think, and forces you to sign up with one of them. But if we have the tools to create our own factions with like-minded players who share similar views and goals within the game world, suddenly you have a far more interesting and open setting.
