Conan Connection

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 1:49 am

I just read Robert E. Howard's Conan story The Scarlet Citadel and noticed the word Dagoth is used as the name of a hill, Dagoth Hill. This may be the first recorded use of the word as well.

Have any of the guys working on the TES games read the REH stories? and incorporated other names into the games?

Dagoth was also used in Conan The Destroyer, he was the dream god that Conan killed. Speaking of which I have the new Conan The Barbarian movie (the one with no Arnold) and it wasn't a bad film---it's doesn't beat the classic but hey B).

The movie Conan The Destroyer was adapted from thee book mentioned in the OP. So, it's still only a single use of the word prior to TES.

I'm not surprised. It's kind of an obvious direction to go with a name when you're trying to think up something evil. It's literally a combination of the words "dagger" and "goth".

The new Conan movie was pretty good.

In the story it's a place, Dagoth Hill, and in the movie it's a person more or less.

I'm still curious about other Conan references in TES.

They steal tons of stuff from books and movies and then they say its their way of honoring these peoples work when really its just stealing a name so people who read a book or seen a movie can identify with it, and go, (oh i know that name, it was in (insert name here) isnt that amazing). I just generally go another bloody cheap rip off.

At this point in time even if they didn't take names, storylines etc. from another source some would inevitably be similar to or exactly like other sources. There's just too much out there for anything to be truly original.

In the story I'm writing I've googled names I've come up with myself and some have not only been used before, but one is the title of an entire novel I never heard of until after googling. I made the name up myself. Needless to say, I'm not using that one name anymore, but the others I'll continue to use because if I try to make sure everything I do is totally unique, it till take years and everyone and everything will have names like "Mowhidyki" or "Reuleriuas" or "Zyaerfxz" (and I bet those names are used somewhere!).

http://oi55.tinypic.com/flblvk.jpg :hehe:

As far as Dagoth, it's well known of Howard's correspondence with Lovecraft and personal knowledge of Assyrian, Babylonian, and Levantine Mythos. Pretty sure that Dagoth was influenced by Dagon...

Oh, what about Asura = Azura?

Bethesda (at least Todd anyways) has made it quite clear that TES has been influenced by multiple sources including Howard's work.

[edit]

Wait... Robert Howard... Todd Howard... :ahhh:

Yeah, I love that face paint. I almost picked that for my character for that reason, but I didn't want to walk around like that permanently. I ended up using one that doesn't cover so much of the facial features with camo.

- Well, as long as you are getting inpiration from the likes of R.E.Howard (not to mention Michael Moorcock and J.R.R. Tolkien) for a fantasy RPG you can't go too wrong... (I have definitely seen an Ebony sword of Soul Stealing or something like that in Morrowind or Oblivion).

- Yeah, if that "Howard" connection messes with your head, check this out - have you ever compared a pic of Todd Howard with Ron Howard (Hollywood director, and "Happy Days" fame). I dunno - it may just be the ears/eyes, but I can't help but see some kinda resemblance there.

I would definitely agree that Todd & Co had some influence from Conan material. When you slide the nord preset slider about 3 along, lo and behold a very Arnie looking face appears...add the black zig-zag warpaint and it looks very much like Arnie in the scene from Conan the Barbarian where they infiltrate the stronghold of Thulsa Doom.

Iconic scene. I enjoyed the new movie, and in some ways it was "lore friendly" to Conan's original background story (he was never enslaved as a boy for example) but I grew up with the Arnie flick and it is my favorite by far because of the low fantasy art direction cinematography and musical score. I see it as an "alternate timeline" for Conan.

Here are a couple of pics of my Oblivion character who was heavily based on R.E.H.'sConan (at least from my imagination and the Conan Comics, etc.) Pay close attention to the sword he's using. ;)

I also had the Atlantean sword but I've always liked the "Father" sword because of the skull on the hilt. I didn't have any shots with the Atlantean sword, unfortunately.

Agreed! The soundtrack and visual aspects of the original Conan the Barbarian have always made it one of my favourite classic fantasy films. The soundtrack is simply superb and fits the scenes so well. "The Orgy" just fits so well with the, um, orgy scene  . "Civilisation" when Subotai comes to the aid of Conan...always raise the hair on the back of my neck. "Atlantean sword" is plain eerie yet mystical...so many superb pieces of music composed by Basil Poledouris

Nice Char images from Oblivion btw. I had the Atlantean sword in the game but not the Father sword. Good find
I have to admit that I chose the Arnie nord face, tweaked it a bit and took the black warpaint. He looks so much like his film counterpart, it`s uncanny. Wearing the fur armor, hide bracers, fur boots and a steel sword completes the image lol.

I haven`t watched the new Conan film with that "Khal Drogo" chap yet but must get round to viewing it.

Although Arnie`s Conan is little like the REH character, I just find the original film so enjoyable and considering the age of the movie, thats still surprising. I also enjoyed "Hawk the Slayer" in it`s time, but when watching it a couple of years ago, I cringed.

Mind you, I still love "Dragonslayer" by Walt Disney from the eighties

I`m guessing your also a fan of Moorcock and a certain doomed albino prince...

Elric of Melnibone? Aka "The White Wolf"? Hm... don't know where you'd get that idea... Heheh.

Conan and Elric were two of my favorite heroes as a teenager. Elric's life of "doom and gloom" wanting to question everything, challenge the Gods, having the "bad luck winds" always blowing on his back... really struck a chord with me in my adolescence (I listened to bands like Black Sabbath, Danzig and Metallica) and I could identify with that sort of "anti-hero." Conan was more the man I strived to grow up to be like - "strong, confident, indomitable." Also, the movie version of Conan with the beloved "lost father"... They are almost polar opposites in many ways, but both struck a chord with me.

Hawk the Slayer, FTW!!! "I punched a bloke in the face once for saying Hawk the Slayer was rubbish!" :slap: I'm adding you to my friends for that reference alone! Yep, the phrase "So bad it's good" really applies to that one. :lmao:

Dragonslayer is another beloved 80's film that has earned it's place in my DvD collection... Also "Legend" (Tim Curry as "the Lord of Darkness" got to be one of the greatest casting/character design choices in fantasy!) not to mention "The Labyrinth" with David Bowie as the Goblin King!

Aww, look you got me all "Off Topic", well, I'll just end with saying it all started with that Conan movie for me (thanks to my older brother since I was "too young" to see it in theaters)... and seeing those great Conan comic book covers at the local store.

Elder Scrolls was just a perfect fit for me, and I've played Age of Conan for a while, too. I haven't played in some months, though.

While we're on the topic of Conan, there is a little interesting trivia. There was going to be a third Conan movie Conan The Conqueror but Arnold was busy at the time and really didn't want to do it so the part went to Kevin Sorbo (Hercules) but he didn't want to do the part cause Arnold aready did it so they changed the name to Kull the Conqueror and gave the main character an Axe. So if you ever want to know how a third Conan would have been, just watch Kull The Conqueror, it has the same plot that Conan the Conqueror would have had.

Yep, I actually have a copy of the original script for Conan the Conqueror. It reads alot like Kull, but since they cast Sorbo in the role, they added more of a comic element to it probably due to his success in the Hercules series.

I'd put that in a bank safty deposit box or a safe and never touch it again...Actually that's a pretty cool item to have, at least you know how a third Conan movie would have been .

Dagoth was also a character in Marvel Comics, created in 1973. I agree that it was probably the Lovecraft influence (Dagon), which Marvel seemed to play with a bit.

I keep it in a safe place along with a script for "Wolverine and the X-Men" from around the same time (in the mid nineties). Trust me, I learned after having a bunch of signed comics stolen (Death Dealer, Wolverine and Conan) one man's (or kid's) treasures is just another's quick few bucks at a pawn shop.

Have a massive tomb of all of Howard's Conan stories. I'm only a quarter way through. The original movie, was just absolutely fantastic. It might not necessarily be the most super accurate adaptation, but it has a lot going for it as a movie. The soundtrack being simply http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1XmZ9_ckdw&list=FLUL8rKGRHr6kt4HRJT6bpww&index=7&feature=plpp_video. It's one of those few very memorable tracks.
