Question about Xbox

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 11:03 pm

Simple question: Is the 4GB Xbox worth it?

Long story made short - my parents just picked up an Xbox with Kinect and a CoD game, but I'm concerned 4GB isn't near enough for all the stuff they want to do with it. (They're trading in CoD towards a Kinect game.) I know zip about consoles so I need some info pretty quick before they open the box.

And about how much is a fair price for a brand new, never opened set of that stuff?

You can always upgrade the hard drive later if it's too small

Can even flash a normal hard drive for it.

No 4GB isn't enough, they'll want at least 2 16GB sticks or a 250GB hard drive. Though, if they're only playing 1 or 2 kinect games and not buying DLC...the 4GB could be enough..or even just a 16GB stick. The 250GB hard drive is only if they are DLC buyers/downloaders, if not..then they should be fine with just a stick.

Well, there will be 4 of us sharing the Xbox as my parents have offered to let my bf and I use it too. He wants to play Splinter Cell and a few others so I know he'll eat the 4G in a second. So you're saying that I can actually plug an external hd into it somewhere and save all our info on there instead of the Xbox itself?

I'm sorry for being ignorant on this fact, but I just feel like they paid too much for such a tiny little system. I wonder if it would make more sense to try to get back their money and buy the bigger one. (They paid $300 for the Xbox + Kinect bundle, plus MW3, and a controler.) And to upgrade this one would pretty much cost the same as if they were to buy the 320, no?

Good news is...300 for xbox, kinect, and MW3 is actually a good deal. If I remember correctly, the 4GB Kinect retails for 199 and Kinect retails for 150 (or it did) and MW3 is 50 bucks so they pretty much saved 100 bucks.

Bad news is the 4GB is pretty much nothing. You cannot install any game to the hard drive and therefore run the risk of wearing out the dvd drive sooner than later, plus it creates more heat, more strain on console, slower loading times, etc. I am a big believer of installing games to HD. Plus side is, you can buy the 250gb hard drive for 100 bucks.

So yeah, the 100 dollars they saved will be spent on a new hard drive. Or you can just buy flash drives and save your games and saves to that... but good luck if you happen to lose one. =)

Last year I bought a 4gb 360 and realized not long after that I would be needing much more space so I ended up buying the 250gb hdd (easy install). The cool thing about having bought the 4gb is that the console is a flat black versus the 250gb xbox that has a glossy finish with chrome trim ( which some like, but i dont). I really love the flat black version better.

I brought mine when Xbox 360 first came out. Mine was 12 gb to use for downloading stuff. It lasted me until about two days ago. But I was constantly down to 3 gbs. I always had to delete stuff. So, if your going to download stuff, 250. If you going to just play, 4 should suffice. (My power cord recently went out, so, that's why it quit working. I'm not buying a new power cord, I've got a gaming PC.)

Thanks guys! The few games we're going to play are fine to load I guess. We're going to look into getting a HD though to add to it. Nothing huge, but this should work for what we're planning. (No DLC and stuff, just a few games like Just Dance and then Spliter Cell for the bf.)

It should be enough, depending on how many games you have/want.
I've recently managesd to fill my 13GB with 90 games, 20 of them are arcade and take up more momory than the disc's save files and DLC.
If you plan on installing discs to your HDD and buying Arcade games or DLC I'd recommend getting a bigger HDD, otherwise it'll do.

- My friend used a 250GB USB/HDD and it only allowed him to use 13GB out of the whole lot, I think Xbox can only handle so much external memory.

I bought the slim 4gb version when it first came out. Within a couple of weeks I was wishing i`d had just bought the 250gb HD version as I was deleting things all the time due to lack of space.
I ended up buying the official 250gb hd on Amazon a few weeks later. 4gb does not hold much at all, especially if you see a game on XBL you fancy downloading :)

an external hdd powered by usb
it wont work cos of the HDDSS.bin file
it needs to be flashed
- Thats what the friend said when talking about using a 250GB whatever and why it wouldn't work

Just get a bigger HDD when you have the monies

Yeah, if you use an external only 16GB max can be used on it. If you can get the 250GB HD for $130, I'd do that. It will last you for a while. I only have 80GB or so used on mine. But don't go out and buy a whole new xbox, you don't need to do that..you can just get the separate HDD, just make sure it's for the slim version which is what you have. Like I said, it's only $130.
