Texture Cache Folder fix

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 1:36 am

It looks like the Texture Cache folder doesn't get created some/all of the time when you install.

Go to C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local replacing YourUserName with your windows login name and create a "id software\rage" folder structure. So you end up with the following folder:

C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local \id software\rage

Again replace YourUserName with your actual windows loging name.

Now when you run the game you will see 2 files in that folder FileCache000.bin and FileCacheHeader.bin. This improves performance greatly although I still see tearing even after forcing VSync with Catalyst Control Center.

If you don't know how to find the folder, open command prompt (CMD.exe) and type the following

start %appdata%/..

Yes, even the dots at the end - they refer the the parent folder. Then, open the folder "Local" inside AppData.

I think you then need to, inside the "Local" folder, create a folder called "id software". Open that folder, and within it, make a new folder called "rage".

I can't guarantee anything at all though, as I don't have the game yet. This is just my guess.

I also get two new files in this directory after creating it and running the game. However, it has not fixed my texture streaming/pop-in issues.
I appreciate your effort in discovering this though.

It really seems that RAGE is in serious need of patching for the PC version.

Also before anyone of you start blaming John Carmack, remember that he is not the only programmer in the studio.

Was a good effort but did nothing for me. Still choppy as hell and unplayable.

I followed the instructions and I have cache files in the directory now. However, performance has not changed at all. The rate of texture pop in when I turn around is exactly the same as before. Granted, I still crash when trying to exit the stasis room, so I don't have much area to test. Thanks anyway, though.

+fs_cachepath "C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Local\id software\rage"

This fix did nothing until I added this to the Steam launch options. Now it helps, but does not entirely fix, the texture problems.

Still with the horrible artifacts, however.

I tried that but it did nothing for me. The game runs smoothly, however its almost too smoothly and the screen-tearing and texture issues make it not fun and unplayable. I'm sorry but I'm not even going to TRY to play it when it looks that bad. I shouldn't have to. What happened last night is inexcusable.

Will try this and repost in a second.

It IS less choppy, tho its still choppy and im still getting artifacts when I turn. So this was obviously part of the problem but the not the entirety.

Also note that setting the game to high priority on the CPU decreased the choppyness a bit as well.

The action suggested above will have no impact. Brian Harris one of our programmers on Rage, has noted that the the code will create the file, but it will only use it if the data is coming from an optical disk. If you open FileCache000.bin in a hex editor, you will see 1GB of zeros.

I created this folder and it did populate itself with those two files once I ran Rage again.
It seems to help with the texture loading problem, awesome find!
My performance is pretty good other than that. (FPS-wise)

Now if I could only get rid of the obnoxious flickering and artifacting so I can start playing this FN thing...

Still kinda wierd my performance was clearly better after it. After deleting it, it is definetly worse.

In my case my AppData folder is on a Intel 320 SSD and my Steam folder is on a black cavier hdd. Is it possible the Rage code sees the AppData folder as faster then my steam folder and uses the cache files?

It sure seemed like things were faster using the AppData folder...

After installing the newest Ati Rage driver, forcing VSync always on, and deleting the AppData folder the game runs pretty good for me.

I have this configuration:

I-7 2600k not overcloed
16 gigs of system memory
HD 6870 with 1 gig memory
