Post-AMD Patching Issues

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 8:38 pm

As the title states, I am continuing to have problems with textures and, more importantly, constant freezing/lock-ups.

After the update the freezing cleared up, but the moment I saved and re-entered the game it returned. It is so bad it is next to impossible to use the mouse to exit the game from the menu. The texture issue never left.

The irritating part about all of this is that my brother was having the same issues (minus the freezing, but he had low frame rate) and all of his issues cleared up the moment he used the current patch. Both of us are using identical 5850's. The only different being my CPU is Intel Core 2 Quad, and his is AMD's Quad equivalent. Now while I know that would cause some differences, I wouldn't imagine the differences would be nearly on this scale. It is demoralizing to see him playing it (he stopped, saying he wants to paint models, but I'm guessing it's because he doesn't want to play the very same game I'm having issues with). I'm at a complete loss as to what to do about it and have looked over Steam forums, and this forum, trying to find solutions and either the ones I find don't apply or out right do nothing to change the issue. So I've made this thread as a means to ask for help related to my particular PC issues, so I can hopefully better solve this problem.

The things I have done so far are this: I uninstalled ATI everything, used Driver Sweeper (in Safe Mode) just to make absolutely certain, and installed the updated patch (identical to the patch used by my brother). I have overclocked and copied the Catalyst settings of my brother. I have created the AppData folders (which created the two files related to the folder creation) and I have rebooted the computer more times than I care to recall. I also re-installed the game, which gave me the most success, though immediately reverted to every problem previously encountered upon restarting the game.

To say I'm at my wits end is an understatement and any, and all, help would be greatly appreciated.

Adding this here, even with a lack of replies, as it is a problem specific to myself and I'd like to keep it in a thread that already contains my problems, haha.

So I discovered that, for some undetermined length of time, my Quad Core had disabled Core 3 and 4. I stumbled on this when deciding to take a shot at overclocking the CPU to see if there was any impact on my freezing issue. Now for whatever reason, upon enabling the cores, RAGE crashes, requiring a Task Manager opening, and error box click, to close it out. For whatever reason the game now refuses to run with all four cores active when it ran, only a few minutes ago, with two active. I have removed the .cfg file to see if that was the cause and even restarted the computer a second time, just in case; all of which resulted in the same crashing situation.

I'm thinking that those disabled cores were quite possibly the issue I had involving my freezing/stuttering, but I am at a loss (short of the re-install of RAGE I keep talking about, haha) as to how activating two cores pissed this game off so much. I appreciate any input about this situation or any ideas at all before I go about with a re-install.

EDIT: To clarify on my crashing. It fails to start up the moment the desktop 'fades to black.' In other words, I do not make it to the Bethesda advertisemant/opening sequence. I very briefly heard the start of it on the second attempt, but saw nothing other than black.

UNRELATED NOTE: I find it greatly amusing that the game's name is RAGE, because I try extremely hard to avoid repeating key words when I type anything and this has given me a unique opportunity to express various words for my disdain at this situation without using the actual, and over used, word 'rage.' Much like how I view World of Warcraft and the actual word 'wow.'

While I know I'm the only one posting in my own little thread, haha, I can safely say that I've got the game working now. The .cfg fixed any texture issues I had (with the only texture delay happening one time {the 'first load') and during unrealistic camera spinning just to test it out). The game was crashing due to Triple Buffering while running all four cores. I find it odd that it wouldn't crash on two and Triple Buffering on, but crashes with the Triple Buffering on and four active cores, but I'm not one to pick apart a good thing while I've got it. I have some minor stuttering (feels a lot like minor lag in online heavy games), but aside from that, everything appears quite well and working. I wish anyone else having problems the best of luck, and if anything unfortunate happens during my play time I will be sure to give this forums a pass and/or post some information. Thanks for all the various help throughout the various threads.
