ok,in fallout new vegas,I type in kill,it says requires a reference,what does that mean,so i type in EX:sunny smiles,and it says,cannot be found,i am frustrated i need help. are these cheats going to be in skyrim too,because i need to learn how to use them

When in the console you need to click on the person you want to kill with the mouse pointer. Their reference ID will show up at the top of the console window and then when you type "kill" he will die. I imagine we will see the same basic commands as in previous games.

To OP: You can't just type the NPC's name, you have to use their ID. For example, if I wanted to kill M'aiq the Liar in Oblivion, I couldn't type "kill m'aiq the liar". I would have to use the Reference ID (in this case, 0000AA5B). To find the Reference ID, you have to use G.E.C.K (the game editor), I believe. For Skyrim, most likely you will have to use the Game Editor, or you could just use UESP to find the ID. They have it listed under the NPCs name, and in due time they will have it for Skyrim.

oorrrr....you could just open the console, click on the npc/enemy (as already mentioned) and their ID pops right up. then just type kill.

You need to type in the character ID of the person you want to kill, not just the in game name. Or you can just click on the character as Reymas said.

Okay, here's a step by step.

*click on dude you want to kill with your mouse pointer. Reference ID and name should appear in the top of the window*

type kill, press enter

Dude should fall down dead.
