Recommend me a decent RPG for under $20

Witcher is worth it.

So is New Vegas.

Not sure either can be gotten for $20 unless you find a nice steam sale. I just got New Vegas with all DLC for dirt cheap over the break. Christmas sales are great over steam.

Two Worlds 2 is an improvement. It may be worth the OP's time. Personally, I couldn't get passed the voice acting and story. Played it for about four hours, switched it off and sold it.
I played and beat Two Worlds 1 & 2. Both games svck tbh but they seem to do a lot of things right and are getting progressively better. I think if there is a Two Worlds 3 it will be worth checking out. The voice acting in Two Worlds was quite atrocious lol.

I actually really enjoy turn based RPGs and I can handle dated graphics to a degree. What will affect me most is dated game mechanics more than anything else, however I think the other mechanics most older RPGs bring to the table will be more than enough to outweigh the supposed bad.

Temple of Elemental Evil.

I'm not sure how "dated mechanics" could affect your turn base RPG experience. Only realtime FPS and Action games cater with game engine over gameplay value. Just because a game has "updated mechanic" doesn't mean it's more fun.

Well since you do not mind turn based RPGs a great series for you to play is Might and Magic. Specifically get 6,7 & 8. I only played 6 and 7 but they are still some of my favorite games. Mages can do some amazing stuff in those games and warriors are fun too. It IS turn based with the option to be real time. When you press enter you enter turn based. When you press it again you exit. You have a party of 4 people with a selection of several classes for each. In 6 you can only be human but you can still create a character from some presets. In 7 you can be an elf, dwarf, human or goblinoid. So it is basically a first person party based RPG that can be turn or real time based but you need turn base for difficult battles and is made with pixels.

They are set in fairly big open worlds and you can find out more about them in this thread if you ask. http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1339569-might-and-magic-thread-from-mm-homm/

Planescape: Torment - I suggest you give it another try. Quite a rich experience.

Wizardry 8 - Turn-based, first-person combat. It's a party based dungeon crawler.

Arcanum - Of Steamworks and Magic Obscura - As recommended by others.

System Shock 2 - A jem which inspired Deus Ex.

Divine Divinity - Combat is akin to Diablo but has a great storyline and ample amounts of dialogue.

Bastion is awesome, definitely.

Another vote for Torchlight for your dungeon crawling needs. I wish the second game would come out already.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/98800/ is a very good, funny and accessible Roguelike RPG (and cheap!). Very different from regular RPGs but definitely worth a look.

Baldur's Gate 2 if you play any, Torment definitely, Sanitarium, Divine Divinity, one of the funniest games played in a while.

Witcher is worth it.

So is New Vegas.

Not sure either can be gotten for $20 unless you find a nice steam sale. I just got New Vegas with all DLC for dirt cheap over the break. Christmas sales are great over steam.

If we are talking The Witcher 1 (which I hope is the game people are referring to) then it's $10 on steam/GoG. New Vegas is $20 without DLC, $40 with all the DLC.

I also recommend Arcanum.

Probably will end up grabbing The Witcher (1) and Arcanum. The only thing that makes me nervous about Arcanum is that you don't (From what I understand) have control over your party members, as in scripting their AI, saying what ability/spell they should use, or defining their place in the party (front/back, etc)

I'm not sure how "dated mechanics" could affect your turn base RPG experience. Only realtime FPS and Action games cater with game engine over gameplay value. Just because a game has "updated mechanic" doesn't mean it's more fun.

The bad mechanics that would affect me would be things like balance. Not a fan of games that have one class, or archetype that equates to superman and the rest equate to Bob the Builder

Fallout New Vegas: Kind of want, but also have my reservations due to the setting. Heard good things about New Vegas... I have quite a few obsidian games on here.

Get it foo'!

If you're worried about it being like Fallout 3, worry not, they're not at all similar. FO3 was meant to be explored (literally, as in the physical world itself), Fallout New Vegas is intended to have lore, characters, factions etc that you can interact with and different endings and outcomes (actual consequences!), and the world reacts to your characters and actions. The two may have the same engine and graphics, but their priorities couldn't be any more different.

If you're worried about not being able to explore in Vegas, then I dunno what to tell you. You CAN, just not to the extent of the average Bethesda game, but I wouldn't exactly call map exploration a cornerstone of a good RPG. Here, you explore different ways to solve quests, different weapons (with different characters, as the "best" weapon is highly subjective and dependent on your character), different combinations of actions etc etc.

And if you have something against it being in a desert and/or a post apocalyptic world, again, I dunno what to tell you. I've never found the setting of a game THAT important as long as the gameplay and story were great, and they are. On that note though, New Vegas doesn't feel as post-apocalyptic as you'd expect. If you're comparing it to Fallout 3, no, you aren't randomly jumped by raiders or a random mutated creature every few feet. Infact, much of the world has become civilized, your battles being fought against those nations that have ideals different than your own.

(note that New Vegas does have the same violence and gore. There's much less fighting overall than in Fallout 3 (plenty of pacifist options available whenever humans are involved in the conflict), but the dismembered body parts are a basic feature of the Fallout series. If you get it for PC, there might be a mod to fix it though. I have the German version which is censored, so humans and human-like creatures are impossible to dismember in any way)

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines is the daily Steam sale today, 75% off, so I highly recommend that one.
