HI,
I am using a different sound card (an X-fi) than the motherboard one and for some reason, the game won't play any sound.
my config:
AMD Phenom™ II X4 965 Processor (4 CPUs), ~3.4GHz + Scythe Kabuto Heatsink
4GB Corsair XMS3
Asus EAH5850 DirectCu Top
Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio
Windows Vista? Home Premium SP2
Gigabyte 890XA-UD3

Here is the exact process:
1. I had the Xfi installed, set as default and working but the other audio device detected (the mother board realtek and the HDMI audio line from the Video card) were available
2. I installed Rage
3. Realising there is no sound I went to uninstall the other devices from the device manager
4. i then went ahead and disabled the onboard sound card in the Bios (thing I should ve done a long time ago but NO other game has caused me trouble)
5. Still no sound with rage
6. Note that the HDMI audio device still show up again as detected but not available (because no cable is plugged in)

Should I uninstall/reinstall Rage?
My last bet is completely removing my Xfi but I really don't want to do that

Found this on the Steam support Forum for Rage:
"No Sound? this is a common issue with creative soundcards - Possible Solution: Buy a new soundcard or try and use your onboard sound."

Get Asus Xonar D1 and try that - EAX is a thing of the past - it's all OpenAL now
