Question about the textures.

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 5:17 am

Every one has seen all the screen shot of the really crummy textures. My game looks exactally the same.

My question is this: Is this the how the game is supposed to look or is it going to be fixed?

I am not sure if I should expect a patch or if I should just stop playing now. This game looks like it should of been released years ago.

It is really disappointing. $60 is to close to $100 for this kind of a product. I feel like I got ripped off.

the way megatextures work you end up with lower res textures than most games. However there are NO repeating textures anywhere. Every single rock, ground tile ect look unique. It looks painted and thats what gives it its unique look. In order to have super high res textures it would be a 100gig game.

What good are unique textures if they look like crap? This is BS this game is trash.

I hate to say this, but I hate the slow load on the textures. It's not that everything is unique, well partially, but the thing is the engine they use is designed for consoles only. They could have easily gotten away with making this game use cell shading, we wouldn't have the issue we do today if that were in place even though I dislike cell shading in a game like this. I feel everyone's pain currently because I too am having an ALL CAPS RAGE!

The game is great. To improve the texture fidelity create a file called 'rageconfig.cfg' in the /base directory of rage. Open it in notepad and copypasta this block of text - minus the quotes...
"
vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly2 8192
vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly 8192
vt_pageimagesizeunique 8192
vt_pageimagesizevmtr 8192
fc_maxcachememoryMB 3096
vt_restart
vt_maxaniso 4
image_anisotropy 4
ik_enablesmoothing 0
image_usecompression 0
jobs_numthreads 4
"

Inside steam in the run options box enter copy pasta this text minus the quotes
"
+set com_allowconsole 1 +set com_skipIntroVideo 1 +set image_anisotropy 16 +set image_usecompression 0 +set g_showplayershadow 1 +set m_smooth 0 +set mem_phymemblocksizem 3096
"
It forces the game to use 8k textures and it looks MUCH better. You can go to 16k if you have the VRAM to do it but the difference is nonexistent.

All in all the game is a blast to play and has much more depth to it than anything ID has done to date. Unless you are staring at the floor the entire time it is an amazing experience because your eyes never pick up patter repetition and the immersion is that much greater.
