Major skills but no perks

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 5:32 am

Do you have in your builds skills you will focus on or want high, but will take no perks in?!
I know I do..

Alchemy, most perks are "quality of life" rather than "game changing"
Sneak, I like a challenge and a short invisibility spell > 6 perks for crouch vanish
Speech, I might take double persuasion, depending on my success rate

How bout you, got any skills that you can live without perks??

I'll skill up one-handed. Don't know if I'll take any perks in it or not.

Forgot about that..
I had high hopes for Wax Key allowing to open doors which require a key, but no.

It just seems thief characters get nerfed a little bit because we have to many perks to pick from, if you pick all the stealth perks you wont have any fighting capabilities

I agree with Lockpicking. I'm hoping that I can cast an open spell in a pinch if I'm not having any luck with the lock.

Speech is another that I will level and boost with Charm Person.

I'm also going to mess around with Alchemy. I'm curious to see if I'll be able to poison arrows, but I don't think any of the perks are game changers for me.

Restoration may be another that I level, but that will be mostly to fix boo-boos after battle. The magic regen rate would be nice, but it may take too many perks to get it compared to how often I'll be using the skill.

I'll be purposefully not choosing some perks to make characters more unique. For example one of my characters will be a cryomancer who uses necromancy and frost magic. So I will take the frost perks in destruction but not fire or shock, so I have an incentive to use frost over other spells.

As for skills I'll use but not take perks in I'm not too sure... Maybe lockpicking for some characters, I want to see how hard a master lock will be to pick without perks :P

What I hate more is having to get Pick Pocket perks just to have Extra Pockets when I don't want any PP perks. I can't image any character I play not wanting to be able to carry more, but I have to be a pick pocket to get the perk? Dang, that's just wrong.

I can see this happening for some non-combat skills. As for the rest, any warrior or mage skill that I increase I will perk it (else is a waste of potential).

Increase stamina since that's what encumbrance is tied to, or enchant some rings/create or buy potions to carry more, no need to go down PP skill tree every character for a bit of extra carry space lol.

completely off topic here... But I love your signature on MW3

OT- My first character will be an archer who only takes stealth perks, as he is based on a combination of riddike and legolas.

You're a thief; your specialty is avoiding a fight. Don't even look at the combat perks.

Nonsense. 90% of these games are fighting. The stealth system isn't even very good for avoiding fights. More for just letting you get cheap shots in.

Is it only a 'bit' more? The perk adds 100, but what can we carry at the beginning with our stamina at 100? Also how much more encumbrance do we get for every point added to stamina? If we are wearing heavy armors and doing a lot of smithing (carrying ore and ingots) how much encumbrance would we want?

That sadly I cannot answer as I don't know. My guess is though that stamina is designed so you can carry a decent of stuff with enough points, then the PP perk for extra weight was made in mind for theives who loot/pick pocket anything of slight value along the way. I suppose we'll have to wait to see if someone explains the stamina/encumbrance mechanic to see how big of a jump 100 is.

My argument was mainly that if you want extra carrying space there is other ways of going about it rather than training and perking a skill you do not want to use.

Plan on using Alchemy, Enchanting, Illusion, Sneak and Speachcraft without any perks in those skills. Illusion perks are the ones I'll miss the most though I reckon, as I'll soon reach a point where my fear and frenzy spells wont be any good against the enemies I'm fighting.
