So what was wrong with traditional co-op? Why an MMO?

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 11:14 am

AKA:
Why did this have to be something they milk more money out of?

I do believe a blow-my-mind fantastic TES MMO is possible. However I am highly doubtful because of:
-A different team of people from a different studio working on it
-The HUGE shift in the business model
-The HUGE shift in the gameworld having 1,000,000 chosen ones running about that in prior games only came about once every century.

TESO is without a doubt in response to the large number of people asking for multiplayer TES.
However I don't ever remember asking for an MMO with thousands of idjits running about. I wanted traditional coop with one or two friends like a very refined Gauntlet.

So I have to ask:
Did you want an MMO or traditional Co-op?
and
On a scale of 1-10, how big a part do you think money played in the decision for an MMO?
(There is no 0 on that scale. It crossed an executive's mind at least more than once.)

Wait, who said anything about it being Bethesda not being at all involved? Or it being a different business model? Or every character being some legendary figure?

Please wait for more information before you condemn the game.

On a scale of anything, there's never ever been a Great co-op WRPG made. Ever. Secondly they milked TES more in the 90s.

The steady model of Arena/Daggerfall was brought back by Morrowind and so on.

An MMO has more influence on Zenimax's financials than BGS's game making skills.

Also anything that's sold always has a financial involvement. Otherwise everything would be free and be calling themselves a charity. Plus Zenimax Media is based in a Capitalist nation(Our United States)

Bethesda has been pretty adamant about not being involved with any MMOs, and Zenimax has been building a new MMO studio(I believe?).

Already built. This game is five years into the works already.

Which is where Zenimax Online, another internal studio, is involved. Their making this game.

Yeah I remember hearing about zenimax online studios in 2007 lol, I had the sneaking suspicion that they were working on Fallout Online (which would explain why bethesda would fight so strongly against interplay if they were secretly planning their own MMO) but oh well haha Ill actually buy this since i love tes but I would have loved a fallout online if it could be close fallout 2238 mod for fallout1/2

more than likely their won't be 1,000,000 chosen ones running around because you probably won't be a "chosen one" in this game it wouldn't make sense.

And to answer the question neither though i'd rather have an MMO so Zenimax can make it. while Bethesda can consentrate on single player TES. But hopefully it turns out good.

I want the main series to stay single player so I'd much rather they just make an MMO too than mess with the main formula and possibly screw it up.

Because companies are stupid enough to think that if they make their own totally original fantasy MMO, they'll manage to latch onto those magical World of Warcraft dollars Blizzard gets. Which they don't, because they all fail horribly.

With a subscription based modeled MMO that looks like wow, smells like wow, and tastes like wow, but has the TES name on it, they can make a bunch of money from consumers who just throw their money without thinking.

It's also known as corporate greed.

They decided that their HUGE success with Skyrim was not due to their returning to their roots in game design, but was rather due to the name. Now that TES is so viral, they figure they can release anything they like, even a turd with the ES name plastered on it, and people will buy it.

And the very sad thing? They're probably right.

But I sure won't be.

Same, the second I saw the further details and saw WoW clone I knew I was going to be giving bethesda games a miss from now on

I would have laughed at co-op a few days ago, saying it would be crude boring and ruin the experience of a TES game. Today I will get on my knee's and beg for that option instead

I choose neither.
Mind you support for 2-4 player drop in co-op wouldn't have that significant an effect on singleplayer experience from a team that always focused on singleplayer anyway.
I never thought small co-op support would "ruin" the game if you just never used it.

And for those that actually wanted it, you also realize that if you actually wanted even just 2-player TES in the original business model, that's probably not going to happen. Now it will just be "Go play TESO".

edit:
OK, Who deleted my poll?
oh [censored] it. No one cares. I think it got deleted with my edit.

I hope that's true. Would be rather sad if they are deleting polls that show over 70% distaste for this project, which is what your poll was at the last time I looked at it.
