Bound Weapons vs. Enchanted Weapons

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 3:36 am

Hey guys, I'm looking to roll some sort of spellsword character(like everyone apparently), and I'm wondering if anyone can help me figure out what's up with Bound Weapons vs. Enchanted Weapons.
So essentially, for enchanting you use a soul gem on the weapon and apply some sort of effect, whereas for conjuration, you just summon a bound weapon. Does it make sense to specialize in both of these, or would the two be somewhat redundant? Any pros/cons I am missing?

I like bound weapons because they can be carried anywhere. I always picture some dude being captured, and the guards are like "Don't worry we've stripped him of all weapons. He's completely harmless", and the prisoner is like "Nope", and conjured sword meets guards neck.

Situational weapons are good to have in bound forms. My breton (spellsword of course) will have bound bow spells to deal with ranged encounters instead of carrying one.

I could see a bound dagger spell specifically for sneak attacks (as that is what daggers are for :flamed: )
Situational.

The rest of your time, your inventory is less clogged.

I think Enchanted weapons would be better for a Spellsword, because they are more powerful. Bound weapons are great for Mages and conjurors, being all mystical and while the Conjuration tree gives them cool abilities, they're mostly Spellcaster-oriented, and the bonus damage kinda makes up for the comparatively low Weapon Skill of the user. Also, Spellswords tend to not have the magicka pool needed to reliably bind weapons and armor: It's better to use that magicka to Blast with Destruction spells, or augment yourself with Alteration spells.

Battlemages love Bound weapons.
Spellswords love Enchanted weapons.

Bound weapon ftw. You yourself becomes the weapon. Also I wonder if the bound weapon give special enchanted attributes?

Bound weapons have the ability to auto-soultrap and banish summoned creatures/turn undead. Plus they look really cool, weigh nothing, and become more powerful as your skill increases.

So they're mostly a situational thing, yeah. Personally I'm hoping they changed up some of the equipment requirements for fighting creatures. If it's no longer enough to simply have an enchanted weapon to fight a ghost or werewolf and it must be silver or Daedric or something then you've got a very good reason to want bound weapons.

Okay, well it seems to me that what I'm looking for is Enchantment, as awesome as bound weapons are.
I'm essentially looking at boosting Smithing to make weapons and armor, Enchanting to enhance them, One handed and Light Armor(Heavy?) to use them, and a bit of archery, restoration, speech, and maybe lockpick to follow that up. Not sure if Destruction magic fits into my idea of my character, but I may not be able to resist zapping dragons with lightning. Hehe!

Follow up question: Looking at the Enchantment Perk Tree, it looks like it might be possible to take this route: Insightful Enchanter -> Corpus Enchanter -> Extra Effect -> Storm Enchanter. Does this seem possible? Because I'd rather not waste my perk points on the fire or frost.

Generally I preferred my weapons enchanted, but with the new look bound weapons have I can say without a doubt my mage will definitely be an adept conjurer!
