Computer Building Site

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 8:14 am

I'm looking for a good site to build my new computer from. My friend recommended iBUYPOWER. But I was wondering if there are any better ones out there?

Thanks.

Here are the better known ones

IbuyPower
CyberPower
XiComputers
addict
digitalstormonline
vigorgaming
MonarchComputers
Falcon nw
Alienware
Abs
Hypersonic
Puget
Vicious
Voodoo

In the reviews I have seen about the machines that come from these sites, it seemed that all of the machines needed some tweaking or repair or final assembly by the end user. Makes sense as sending a built PC through the not gentle hands of UPS/FedEx tends to knock things loose. Not that I am saying these are junk machines, they are just not ready to go right out of the box.

In other words, build your own.

I second this, anything they can build you can build better (and cheaper too).

I planned on building my own...that was the whole point of asking for a good site to BUILD a pc on.

I am in the same boat as you.

I know what to get and what I want, but dang it I am a nervous nelly when it comes to things like this, so I am saving up atm for a site to build my PC.

Anyone can preach as much as they want: "It's like advlt Legos!" "Building your own is cheaper and more rewarding!" "Read the guides online, it is easy!"

Well, 1. I never played with Legos before and 2. I talk the talk, but I can't walk the walk so that is why I need a professional to do it!

But to answer your question, I have been eying ibuypower and CyberPowerPC, I have seen good things about them (Even from these forums).

The traditional definition of "building your own" is purchasing and assembling the parts yourself. If that's what you want to do, I'd recommend buying parts from Newegg.com, possibly TigerDirect.com, and Micro Center if they have a store near you and you're looking for the best deal on a processor.

The site you referenced sells custom PC's. You chose the parts, they build it and send it to you, which isn't the same thing as "building your own".

So, are you looking to build yourself a PC, or are you looking to buy a custom PC?

I've never used any of these places, but from what I've heard, Alienware tends to be a bit on the expensive side. Also, I believe Alienware is quite connected to Dell, tho I'm not sure how deep that runs.

I know author/geek http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Scalzi used iBuyPower to build his rig a couple years ago or something. I talked to him on Twitter about it, as well as he wrote in his blog. It was the 1st time he'd used them and he was happy with it. I think it did initially come with a part that didn't work (don't remember which part, maybe one of the HDD's) or some such, but they quickly replaced it and all was fine.

And yeah, building your own rig may not be rocket science, but it's still easier for many to let someone put the parts together for them. Nothing wrong with that. Not everyone has the time/energy/knowledge to deal with building if something goes wrong.... or just doesn't work as expected. However, if you use one of these places, make sure it's not a problem to reformat/wipe the HDD and install your own O/S (or reinstall it), or to install new hardware later. Make sure what they're building isn't actually proprietary or limiting in some funky way.

You might be better off finding someone who will take the parts you buy/give him and build them into a rig for a fee (eg, a local "shop" guy, or friend if you have one) rather than a pick-from-our-list-of-parts-we'll-build and send-it service website.

as someone who lacks the manual dexterity to "build my own computer" I have had both Cyberpower & Ibuypower systems & they both have been good experiences

though I did get me a USB 56k modem for the Ibuypower computer since it lacked the option to get a 56k modem preinstalled
