I don't have FO nor OB - How do I unpack .bsa files?

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 10:03 am

I tried BSA Commander, but it fails. Both Mod Managers for OB and FO require a game directory on launch and refuse to start. What options do I have? I searched, but couldn't find any information

BSA Commander

Edit: Just saw you tried it. In that case, create a dummy directory for Oblivion and/or FO

Thank you, but it doesn't seem to work. Does it look for a specific file or folder structure?

EDIT: creating a bogus fallout3.exe did the trick! Thanks for pointing me in that direction!

Just because I've been trying the same thing with BSA Commander, what exactly do you mean by 'create a dummy exe?' What file do I need to fake exactly, and where do I need to put it (or my Skyrim bsa files) in order to unpack them?

BSA Commander is expecting a version of 0x67 in the BSA header. Skyrim uses version 0x68 which is why it's complaining. If you can't get FOMM/OBMM to work (although, looks like you figured it out), you can open the BSA up with a hex editor and change byte 5 to 0x68 (that's 104 decimal).

All I did was create a folder called "Fallout 3". Then I created a new text document and renamed it to "fallout3.exe". I then pointed FOMM to that directory and everything was fine. You can choose what bsa to load and where to unpack freely, so it's up to you where to install it and where to put your fake directory. I put everything in a "modding" folder in my steam files

Or, for straight-forward extracting with slightly less effort, use the Fallout 3 Archive Utility.

That doesn't work when the "file-blob"-body is prepended by the BSTR-type file-name (it's a flag in the BSA).
