For those of you who do not know, the old Mechwarrior reboot trailer marked the return of the Mechwarrior franchise. The company had some trouble getting backers, and had to shelf the game for a while. Last November, they had an unveiling for Mechwarrior Online. They could not find a publisher for the first iteration, so they decided to do it all themselves, leading to a free-to-play model (much like League of Legends) and a persistent online-only game world that evolves day by day (literally. Each real life day is a day in the game universe). This will allow them to release mechs, weapons, etc as the universe continues to move through its timeline.

I've been following this since before its official announcment back in November, and I'm very happy to see it starting to come to fruition. Expect gameplay videos soon, as Pirhana Games is at GDC and do have a demo planned. Beta should start soon after, as the game is planned to release this summer.

Game looks amazing for free to play, I hope they have a fair pricing model in place. I missed the whole mech warrior scene as a kid, and I very much regret it. Will be playing for sure.

They've made sure to point out at every opportunity that their model will be as fair as possible. You will be able to buy all mechs, equipment, and weapons with c-bills (in game earned currency), but they have mentioned being able to purchase those things with real cash money as well. Its likely they'll also have aesthetic (they will absolutely have a Hula Girl, for instance. That has been a particular object of fixation for the community since the Mechwarrior reboot trailer) items. They also mentioned being able to transfer XP between mechs (mechs use an XP system that allows you to unlock "Efficiencies" that make your mechs slightly better at certain things) for a cash price and perhaps a penalty.

So, much like League of Legends, they claim that they won't have anything (that effects gameplay) that you can't earn through playing the game, but there will be things that do not affect gameplay (or, like XP transfers, indirectly affect it) that are available for purchase.

Game looks amazing for free to play
Indeed. They're using the CryEngine 3. They've also got an excellent concept artist that emerged from the fandom doing all their redesigns (http://flyingdebris.deviantart.com/). He's done work on some of the Technical Readouts and source books for the Battletech tabletop, and, as I said, he's a master of redesigning old designs to http://mwomercs.com/media.

This looks like fun. Could be a great trip down Memory Lane.

No, but many people on the MWO forums thought that at first.

It's a "Swayback", that is, the -4P variant of the http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Hunchback, with the autocannon on its shoulder removed and replaced with 6 medium lasers. That's why it looks like missiles. Its actually the laser lenses.

I squealed like a little girl when I heard the Mechwarrior 2 startup sequence!

Er, well, it was close anyway. They changed the last word from "nominal" to "online" - it just doesn't sound the http://www.noblefusion.com/graphics/mw/nominal.wav.

They only changed it as a play on words. "All systems online", and the game is Mechwarrior Online

Pretty sure its only that way for the trailer. In addition, they pretty much confirmed as much when they posted the Hot Drop:
One never became used to it. The fall. The drop from the heavens to the hells of the battlefield. The jolts became harder, more frequent. Com-pvssyr non-existent, she wondered how many of these she had been on. Hell, she knew of at least twelve drops in this Leopard alone. Her recon lance, long veterans of being in the first wave, were around her, though she could not see them. Suddenly her ‘Mech came to life, and she toggled all systems on, running a quick check. Reactor online, Sensors online, Weapons online, All Systems Nominal. Purring like a kitten, she thought, giving a thumbs up to the ‘tech looking at her.

Its funny how fast people caught on to that bit in the trailer and got frothy mouthed. Heh, they like to yank our chains a lot.

True enough. I'm sure you're right - they've been playing it up to be a real successor to Mechwarrior 2 / Mercenaries. Which is a very good thing in my view.

Trailer was awesome and I can't wait what they reveal on GDC.
I had a change to go GDC, but I was not one of those lucky ones who got selected. :(

I love all these amazing free to play games that are being developed at the moment. I'm also being struck by nostalgia somewhat, I loved the Mechwarrior 4 level that involved attacking a desert base and defeating James Kulin in single combat.

http://mwomercs.com/forums/topic/4911-atlas-cockpit-systems-overview/

If you discount the multiples (due to elements of the HUD), that's... about 13 unique interface elements.

Bryan Ekman (A developer) comes it any explains some awesome elements as well, but then he gave a pretty big reveal: there are two crosshairs. One for your torso mounted weapons, and one for arm mounted weapons, meaning that the torso weapons do NOT follow your arm weapons, so you must can aim them separately.

Hmmm, I'm kinda confused after this trailer....is this a game or complete badassness.?

HA!....this trailer made me smile in a big way. I honestly didn't care too much about this game before....just b/c I wasn't optimistic, but now....well, heres to a lot of hope.

I was just about to post that.

Yes, it looks awesome, and the attention to detail is very nice. The scale of the mechs is spot on, and the way they move is perfect. You can even see the Atlas' arms move up and down as it takes steps.

The Jenner also looked very agile. You could see just how well it could turn.

The Hunchback was a beast in the video. You can see just how fast it shreds the armor on the other mechs.

Yeah, gameplay looked great. Small things like how SRM's were fired in tight pack was little weird since SRM's really wont scatter that way what they should.

Well, it still is pre-alpha. They said it would enter alpha in about a month, and then beta sometime this summer. I'm excited for that, since Russ stated that people who were signed up got a shot at the beta. I expect that people who signed up earlier have a higher chance for the beta.
