Now many of the Nay sayers, are just ignorant, so we'll leave those people out, but another majority is hating it because its not like the single player of Elder Scrolls... "omg its gonna ruin the Genre, cry cry, whine whine" "Its nothing like the other games, cry cry, whine whine".... my response... duh? Doesnt take much of a genius to realize WHY either...
But for the mass majority of those who simply dont get it, let me give an example.
Say the MMO is setup exactly like the single player..
*I press and hold ctrl key, sneaking along, as the NPCs dont see me *yet the 100 people who pass me clearly see me*, I then attempt to pick a NPC's pocket (Sorry this NPC has been pickpocketed today, please try again tommorrow) >.<* Remember, to stick with the Lore, and how Single Player Elder Scrolls works, thats the best they'd do.. now you could argue they could make an NPC be pick pocketable all the time... Then you run into this scenario....
*I press and hold ctrl key, sneaking along, and pick a NPCs pocket, success!... I do it again, success!, I do it again, success! now another person comes, we both successfully do it, success! wait, another person 15 minutes later we got 30 ppl picking the same NPCs pocket, success!!!!!* >.< yea.... no... simply not gonna work
How is Thievery gonna work? sneak into a house everythings gone already, sneak into another, oh thats been plundered too, what a shame... you just wasted 20 minutes trying to find a good house to burglarize with no success, come back tommorrow, try again! >.< no, not gonna work..
Now lets move on to those who argue it should be different than the normal MMO styles...
This I can be with you on, it would be nice if they did make it a bit different yes? but here's the thing... they still can.. Its still not entirely set in stone, and instead of crying and whining about it, you got a few options:
1) Wait and see, MAYBE they add new things never seen before in MMO's, since.. you know, this IS Elder Scrolls after all...
2) Make your voice be heard in a mature, and non annoying little 12 yr old high pitch squeeling.. MAYBE the developers will hear the majority's IDEAS and NOT their negativity and Nay Saying... Developers are people too, and all your doing is discouraging them of putting their hearts into a game, even the fan base hates.... tisk
3) Simply walk away and dont play... Pretty simple.. we dont need your crying here..
My Thoughts on the MMO:
I personally have high hopes for this MMO, and that they can reveal new and interesting things that they'll put into this MMO. And if worse comes to worse and its exactly like other MMO's... who REALLY cares? Its a great story, with great lore, and is highly enjoyable.... Bethesda are great story tellers... Games are NOT about JUST the gameplay, its also hugely focused on the STORY of the game... (This is where most game developers fall face first mind you, they think its 90% gameplay 10% story, and the game svcks over all except to the most ignorant of kids, which i'm sad to see their numbers rising majorly every year)
What I *personally* would like to see, is a game that requires... a bit of skill.. time, and effort.. Anyone who's played FFXI knows what -real- time, skill and effort in an MMO means. (And to further clarify, I'm talking about FFXi BEFORE last expansions, Around the Rize of the Zilert expansion, not the pile of crap FFXI is now).. If you came into the genre of WoW or later.... well you have no real idea just how rewarding, awesome, and self pride you can have by accomplishing things in an MMO... You may get those feelings in later MMO's, but nothing to the extent of games like FFXI or earlier.. EverQuest being another..
I played FFXI for 5+ years more time put into it than Aion, SWTOR, GW, put together. Why? Because these games are boring, dull, the same old, same old. Getting the best armor, weapons, etc. is about as hard as me going downtown and buying a can of soda... (and takes just about as long as well when your at the appropriate level).
In FFXI.. 5+ years, and I still had not achieved all of the best armor and weapons, some being incredibly rare Rare Monster drops, Monsters that only come out at certain times, etc. Some weapons and Armors only being obtainable after you jump through 100 hoops, and even then you might not get it..
Now to players of today that sounds like a chore, boring, "omg I spent a week alone getting this 1 item, and my next one will take half a month!" is something to shy away from.. For me.. It looks like an adventure and challenge, something to overcome, (and have huge fun with my friends while attempting to do it, apart from the never ending boring grind sessions of MMO's of today). Lets face it.... Gamers of today are just straight up greedy and lazy, and want everything handed to them (You can thank WoW for this)
Cutting down the difficulty and time consumption may be a good idea from what EverQuest and FFXI was, but none the less, I'd like to see -some- difficulty of achieving things..
Payment Method:
I've seen alot of whining and crying about it -must- be F2P I say bring on the P2P. But let me re-cap why...
F2P: Beloved by many gamers of today because, again.. their greedy... sorry, maybe thats a bad start, but its true none the less... (yes yes, I know some of you are just that hard spent to play games, and I feel for you, being one of them.. but no reason to ruin it for millions of others)
1) Free to Play
2) Cash shop with Over powered weapons/armor making PvP unbalanced and favoring those who can pay (Heres where the irony and Oxymoron is, including why many of the F2P lovers hate the cash shop, "Its so unfair, blah blah" then pay yourself.. they need to make money some way, and you wont be spending money on an item u can get ingame....)
3) Lower customer support
4) Lower security for the game over all
5) Less GMs
6) More Hackers
7) More Gold Sellers
8) Less Expansions and new things being released
9) Taking longer for those expansions, new things to be released
(Note 3-9 being because the cash shop is not a steady flow of income, and they cannot gaurentee a profit every quarter, *hint hint*, they dont know just how much they'll be making, so they cannot hire as many GMs, specialists, etc. to track the hackers, gold sellers, and work on new expansions all at the same time as heavily as if they had it P2P)
Now P2P (Anyone who's really played a good P2P game back in the day, know its just superior to anything a F2P game can give)
1) Pay to play
2) No cash shop with over powered items/weapons, everyone has a fair chance, and same oppertunity to get the same items, and PvP is more balanced
3) Higher customer support (Because of the steady flow of income)
4) High security for the game over all (Because of the steady flow of income, they can work LONGER on the security for even months)
5) More GMs
6) Less Hackers (Because of more GMs, and more people watching it, because of the steady flow of income)
7) Less Gold Sellers (Square Enix did this better than any other MMO I've ever seen, Gold Sellers were never seen spamming in cities, and caught with a very very high %)
8) More Expansions, and more things being released (Because they can dedicate a full time team to work around the clock to bring you these things, because of the stead flow if income)
9) Less time than F2P for the expansions, etc. to be released.. For obvious reasons if you've been reading..
Now taking the list above and the reasons, Its pretty simple to see that if you want the MOST out of any MMO, P2P is the way to go.. Now for all you Nay sayers, here's the hitch.... If its F2P.. they WILL NOT be making it much different, if any different than other MMO's.. they wont have the money, time, or security to try something -new- that may fail.... However... If its P2P... they can get more creative, and spend many more man hours coming up with ideas..... Get my point?
Edit: I forgot to mention the few MMO's that went from P2P to F2P, and these games are quite extensive yes, like Aion, and WoW, Aion being the only one I've played, Aion just released Ascension, off of the profit of it being P2P... After this.. good luck waiting awhile for anything new.. These games did get a jump start compared to F2P games, So they cannot be compared, I call them Hybrids.
Edit 2: Reading what I wrote, some people may get confused when I first praise P2P games, then bash them saying their boring dull, drawl.. Notice the difference in what I'm talking about.. The P2P games like Swtor, Aion, etc. do/did have everything I listed in the list compared to their F2P counterparts, But they still are taking the WoW wagon of failure (in my opinion) of making the game waaaaay to easy, and more of a point/click no skill involved spam everything omg look i got the best armor for doing practically nothing!" route....
