To install or not to install

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 7:14 am

I just got my copy of Skyrim. I am playing on the 360. So do I install the game to the HDD? Before I was reading that it is better not to. So I am confused. I see I had to install a patch but it didn't take long to download. So what is best? Nomrally I install all my games to the HDD but for those who play on the 360, what works best for you?

Also why is it called the HDD? I can see Hard Drive, but what is the extra D stand for?

HDD stands for "hard disk drive"... because it utilizes a disc. As for whether to install or not, I'm not sure. I don't have to deal with the problem due to the platform I'm playing on, but it's a perplexing issue with the 360 version. Install it and you get blurry textures. Don't install it and you get additional stress on your 360, additional heat produced, additional noise, and longer loading times.

In this case, it would be better to take the lesser of two evils. Install it, because Bethesda can fix the texture problem. They cannot fix an overstressed Xbox. Besides, it's quieter, so you can hear more of the magnificent music.

You know what, I never thought of that ket m'ar. I will take the lesser of the two evils and I am installing it now. Thank you very much, I forgot about the wear and tear of the Xbox. I already have 1 Xbox where the DVD doesn't register don't need another one.

It really doesn't matter either way. I was playing off the disk and got the problem in my first 20 minutes. There's no way around it on our end.

I am a little perplexed by this. None of the reviews I've read or watched online or in magazines have made any mention to a specific texture bug in the game, in fact only Gametrailers.com mentions that the game has any bugs at all. Also if you take into account the number of people around the world who own this game and look at the proportion of those people who are reporting this issue, the number is very small so, although I don't have my copy yet so obviously I cant be certain of this, currently I'm not convinced that the issue is as bad as people are making out. Even on the screenshots that some people have posted on these forums comparing the HD textures to the apparently buggy low res textures, the difference isnt that noticeable.

Install to USB drive fixes the problem.

Check this (photo's I took from my plasma, so a bit blurry but the difference is clear enough)

Right after installing the game to the HDD. Very blurry textures, very clear to me that this is just an issue where a certain layer of texture detail isn't loaded

After clearing the cache, problem persists

Then removed the installed game data and playef off the disc. At first startup, the textures remained the same, but after playing for about 10mins and visiting some other areas, and then returning to the same place, I got this:

To install the game, go to where you are about to play the game. Instead of hitting A button, to start the game, hit the Y button.

Not sure about the texture issues since I don't know how it's "suppose" to look. All I know, Oblivion and Morrowind looks better so I guess I do have the "issues".

So what's the consensus? I'm installing it now because I've heard it loads slower if you don't, but is it going to look bad? Should I uninstall it? Or did the patch fix this? Have yet to play, can't wait, but I'm not going to play until I figure out if it'll look good.

I have uninstalled it for now. I don't know it just looked horrible for me. Bad enough I get motion sickness, (also lack of sleep so had a good nap on the couch about to play soon) but found the graphics worse than Oblivion. I thought Oblivion looked bad now on the 360, Skyrim installed on the 360 looked worse.

I guess all those videos we saw were either not installed on the HDD of the 360 or was played on a computer to emulate a 360. No way this can be the same game on the videos we saw. Funny took about 5 or 10 minutes to install, took one second to uninstall. I find the graphics better not installing to HDD for now.

I don't think the wear and tear will be that much of a problem for the short period of time I will be playing "off the disk". Hopefully Bethesda is working on this right now and will be fixed in a patch soon.

Wow I didn't install it and the graphics look like a PS2 game. All jaggy and stuff...Is that how it's supposed to be? I should've gone PC if it's going to stay this way, I feel like I'm playing Final Fantasy XII or something. At least the gameplay will rock and hopefully I'll be able to ignore it.
