Character Edit After Creation

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 1:20 pm

I am curious to know if anyone else would like to see something along the lines of Fallout's barber shops where you can change hair, face paints and minor cosmetic things after the character creation. Rerolling a character when you finally notice how goofy your character looks at lvl 10 is a bummer.

Open up the console (~) and type: showracemenu. Press the console again to start making your changes, than save the game without exiting the character creation menu.

Why do you have to save the game without exciting the character creation menu? I know why in Oblivion, because of the skills beeing reset and all that, but is this the case in Skyrim aswell? Please reply, since I've been changing my looks using the Showracemenu quite a few times and just accepting it and conitued playing. So far I haven't noticed any bugs about it, but I don't want to spend alot more time into a character and find out that I screwed up because I used this command incorrectly.

No, the skills do *not* reset in Skyrim - so long as you stay the same race, all your skill values will be carried over properly. If you do change your race, things might get a little weird, though.

We're going to have to play around with this feature a little more before we can confirm it works without causing any issues down the line. Once we have the creation kit we should be able to know for sure exactly all that is involved with using that menu.

If it helps, in New Vegas, I used to change my facial features pretty often and accepting to continue playing, and it never caused issues.

Tested this out first by changing the race of my character and it left my level the same but my skills were set as if i just started the game and same thing happened when i stayed the same race.

I've changed my facial features a few times. As far as I can tell, it's all good as long as you don't change your race. I must've played at least 20 hours on my character since I did the first facial edit, and I haven't noticed any issues at all.

"Press the console again" yeah--that's an important part--glad I saw your post 'cause I couldn't figure out why showracemenu wasn't working for me. :lmao:

Thanks :hugs:

I hear people talking about stuff resetting, but I just edited my face, and I had no skills/stats change (besides my active effects. Just had t re-equip my enchanted gear. My permanent effects were unaffected.)

This is troubling. I wouldn't feel confident using it without knowing the long-term effects.

I opened the console, typed showracemenu, hit enter, closed the console, made changes to face, eyes, hair and clicked "Done". It changed NOTHING in my stats/skills!

When I do it, it resets the bars on my skills. So if I was halfway to 31 in Sneaking, it sets the bar back to 0, on every skill. It also re-set my health and stamina, before I did the change they were 180 and 145 respectively, after, they were 160 and 120. After I un-equipped and re-equipped my Minor Health ring, my health went back to 180, but the stamina seems to be gone for good. I just used the console to out it back to 145.

How does one save the game without quitting the race menu? Is it a console command?

Yes: save "name your savegame". PC Players should never yuse the built in method to save their game. Always use the console so you have named saves.

However, when I issued the 'save' command, while in the menu, it wouldn't save. I had to exit the menu and save the game.

I just checked. My stats/skills were unchanged but my racial bonus effect disappeared. Strangely, nothing changed the first time I did this. From the main menu when I load the backed up saved game from before I made the changes and change my character from there my racial bonus disappears now. Really strange. And you CANNOT save your game IN ANY WAY when in the race menu. :nope:

I'll definitely test this. I'm mostly interested in altering some aesthetic aspects of the character —hair, facial features . . .—, so if doing this isn't troublesome ATM that is good to know.
