The River

It's a bit late in the season (one more episode this Tuesday and the finale is the next Tuesday) but I thought this show was worthy of a thread.

If you don't know about the show, it's a self-documentary/found footage filming style about a famous explorer, Emmet Cole, who has his own TV show. The show starts off with him going missing 6 months prior and is believed to be dead, until his signal is found once again in the Amazon where he disappeared. His son, Lincoln, and wife, Tess decide to go look for him along with a 3 man film crew. The disappearance of Emmet and his crew is intertwined with horrible myths, legends and magic

It's filmed by the same people as Paranormal Activity and was looked over and approved by Steven Spielberg. The first episode was filmed in Puerto Rico and the rest are in Hawaii.

So, this thread is for discussion and opinions of the show as well as to introduce people to it. So, discuss.

Remember to use spoiler tags. Also, as far as I know, the show isn't airing in the UK.

I've thought that the idea was better than the execution. For me, it basically boiled down to scary monsters/ghosts in the forest vs scary knowledgeable Spanish girl who happens to know every folk tale there is. Wasn't really fussed with the human aspect.
Although:

I agree, that was the only time I actually jumped while watching it.

I found the premiere episode (which was just 2 episodes back to back) watchable but nothing special, yet I kept on watching. This is partly because I crush on Bruce Greenwood, and partly because it was 2am and I had nothing better to do.

Then each week I keep saying "nothing special" but I keep watching. It's not scary at all...or even suspenseful...but then not many TV shows are scary, imo. Hard to be scary when interrupted by auto insur. commercials. Best can be said is that the show is occasionally visually creepy.

I don't know, it's odd, because while not all the acting is great and there are glaring contrivances galore, for some reason I keep turning it on. Something about the mystery of what happened to the father and "what's the reason for that tattoo on the gal's neck" keeps me in, I guess. But I can't see the show being drawn out for seasons and seasons. If they end it after the 8 episodes or renew it for 8 more (total of 16), say, I'd be fine with that. More and it would be too much. :)

You can definitely see the influence by the Paranormal Activity directors, but it kind of works in this setting in my opinion. It's not as ridiculous as the movies. I has the filming tactics of Paranormal but the story telling of something like Lost.
