Game Crashes to desktop on startup

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 5:31 pm

Hello all, I just installed the retail copy of Skyrim from the disk. Everything installed fine, but when I try to play the game on Steam through the autolauncher, it just loads to the Skyrim logo and then everything completely closes and puts me back at the desktop. No error message or nothing! I go back into Steam and click "Play" again, and it does the same thing. I've tried running as an administrator and clicking on the direct icon in the Skyrim folder bypassing the autolauncher altogether, but it does the same thing. I've uninstalled it and reinstalled it, but it didn't help. Also, Skyrim doesn't show to be running when I check the task manager under applications or processes. How can I play my game?

I'm able to get to the Auto Launch, set up my settings, and then start the game. Gets to the Main logo and CTD. By this point I figure it has to be a driver issue. Because ive tried everything i can think of for my desktop, with no success. But if i load it up on my laptop (both have Nvidia cards) it plays just fine, no issues whatsoever.

Its happen ing to me too THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE! I paid $60 for this game and for it to not work straight up is very infuriating.

I am having the same excact issue, but with me, I get to the point of where it says start new game, click yes, and then it gives me a intro screen with some words about Alduin and then it throws me back to the Steam start up page, complete and utter stupidity, I can't believe this is happening

This issue is most commonly fixed by changing a sound setting.
Go to control panel --> sounds and then select properties for your default device. Under the advanced tab, set the quality to 16bit and 44.1 Khz
