Why would anyone care about an intoxicated pest? When I'm out of bananas and they start text-stalking me at 3 AM with lustful fruit fantasies, then I'll care...

"barfly" has been a derogatory term for more than a century for a good reason. Perhaps this term was the catalyst for the research by lonely alcoholic scientists looking for comparative redemption.
