I also had trouble purchasing Minecraft online.
However, I was using one of those pre-paid "Vanilla" Mastercards, and my problem was that I just had to login on the card's website and register my postal address -- essentially online shopping is impossible until you do that, which you think is important enough for them to WRITE IT SOMEWHERE SO YOU KNOW.
When I was trying to figure it out, it seemed like lots of people had various payment problems of Mojang not wanting to take their money.
It seems the common solution was to use their card to put funds on a Paypall (I think it was Paypall, anyway) account of theirs, then purchase Minecraft via that, and supposedly that works seamlessly.
