How does it work, what teams do you like?
I turned on my tv I thought I was watching soccer but the guys were touching the balls with their hand. I was on the BBC channel because they had Star Trek on last time I turned off the Television.
At first I thought I was watching soccer then I saw a dog pile and realized they qualify for a sport in my household (it isn't a sport unless there is physical contact)
I'm curious about the game, but not a too long didn't read kind of way.

Im Welsh, I support Wales. And anyone who is playing against England, and anyone who plasy against France (even England).
Rugby is fun to play, I would watch it more often if my mother didnt. I hate people who shout at the tv.

I think my neighbour would beg to differ. He's a keen rugby player and leek grower!

Rugby is one of the funnest team sports ever invented. If I had to explain it to an American with the least amount of effort I would say "It's football without the safety gear except you don't stop every time the guy with the ball is tackled/falls. I play on my high-school team and though I'm not much good (not trying to be modest here I svck, but then again most of us do  ) it's still a ton of fun. I'd recommend it to anyone who doesn't have a problem with being tackled hard and enjoys tackling others! BTW, my favorite team is Scotland. Oh yeah...and I play both union and sevens but I prefer union since you don't have to run around as much (though there's more tackling ).

Internationally I support England, since I'm English. I also support anyone playing against France, because again, I'm English.
There are two different types of Rugby, the one you would have been watching was Rugby Union, so give http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rugby_union a little read.
Sports can be non-contact, like Tennis or Athletic, a sport is anything that is physically competitive. Not just sports with contact.

Having played both rugby and football (american) I have to say that Rugby was the funnest. And we svcked, bad, We won one game by default because the other team forfeit. Really wish there was more interest in rugby around here. Sadly bad feet and a bunk knee prevent me from playing either anymore.

That sounds pretty accurate to me, though I must admit that I know very little about either sport. Only ever played a few rugby matches in high school and watched a few games on tv. I find rugby incredibly exciting, and American football boring as hell. It's like rugby, but everyone is so afraid to get hurt that they dress up in more armour than a late medieval knight, and the players apparently lack stamina because there's a break like every fifteen seconds.

Rugby is awesome, a shame it isn't popular here. All you ever see is soccer and bicycle racing, neither of which I find particularly exciting, to say the least.

I like American Football too (played a lot with friends; no coach, no gear, no referee, uneven teams etc.) , and it takes a lot of planning and teamwork. Imagine it as life-size, contact chess. I especially love how you can tackle people who don't have the ball to protect your own runner. I believe they need safety gear because they way they tackle; in rugby it's more like wrestling the other guy down but in football they collide full speed and if you do that consistently, it's likely you will suffer brain damage even with equipment. Though if it came down to it, I'd still pick rugby.

I always thought Gaelic football was more fun to play. Rugby seemed to involve too much lining up and choreography whenever we played it at school.

Hmm, you do make it sound more interesting than I thought it was. It's probably a lot more fun to watch if you understand the game better.

I come from a big rugby family. Really enjoy it. I played up until 15, but then chose tennis over it. Love watching England play. I'm not a big club rugby fan, although I'll watch the odd Super 15 game.

Im Australian, while I don't mind watching Rugby Union (the version you saw), I much prefer Rubgy League which is played between interstate city teams here. Rugby league is a little less chaotic then Union.

I think the best thing about Rugby is the respect shown to the refs. In football you can tell the ref to [censored] off, scream in face, chase him. In Rugby you have 6"6 blokes turning to church mice once the little ref gives them an ear full!

I didn't make the rules, I just play by them.

Thanks for the explination folks, rugby union sounds really cool.
Now that I'm sober I also figured out where Wales is.
