So I went ahead and got the game anyway..

With all the rage posts here, I thought I would leave some uplifting words to balance it out. It appears that the game does work very well on some systems. Might be just luck with my hardware configuration, but so far (2 hours in) the game runs flawlessly. No bugs, smooth v-sync locked 60 fps (with 20-30% gpu activity and generally 10-30% cpu activity). It actually feels pretty optimized to me. I saw the cpu activity reach as high as 45% at one point and I have never seen a game go that high (which to me is positive as it seems at least 2 of my 4 cores are being fully utilized. The textures on random clutter (boxes and whatnot) is absolutely atrocious though. Characters, weapons and vehicles look very nice on the other hand.

One important thing to note is that I downloaded the latest Nvidia beta drivers, which specifically stated that they were optimized for Rage.

It's still far from perfect though.

- It needs a graphics customization menu badly. Some have worse systems than me and may need to adjust it down, and some have higher-end systems and would like to squeeze as much graphics out of the game as possible. We shouldn't have to create our own config files for this.

- It really should lower mouse sensitivity in menus.

- Random clutter objects should have high(er)-res textures.

- The game fired up on my TV instead of my monitor (even though the monitor is set as primary). I have to manually disable my TV whenever I want to play. This also happened with Dead Island, but I managed to fix that with a fairly simple config edit. I browsed the game folders but didn't find a suitable file for this in Rage. Saw a lot of files named 360 though; either leftovers from the console version or perhaps just various button mappings for the 360-for-PC controller, in which case I don't mind.

- The vehicle physics svck. 'Nuff said.

All in all I am so far not regretting getting the game. As for the actual gameplay, the gunplay is very smooth and responsive. Tossed my first grenade and hit spot on killing two enemies, and the boomerangish weapon is easy to aim and fire. Got like 29 I think on the test that chick gives you (10 was the requirement).
The difficulty seems a bit easy so far on Normal, but at least there are 4 different settings (I guess they did learn something from the Doom series). Regenerative health svcks, but it's not too bad.

I agree with what you said. I don't have a problem with no in-game graphics selections myself since I'm used to editing config files for optimization. You should have started on hard which is still very easy. In the IGN review the guy said normal is way too easy and you should try hard if you're experienced with FPS. I hear nightmare is ridiculous after the 4th mission or something.

Anyway glad you enjoy the game!

I think it's possible to change the difficulty after starting a game, or am I wrong? Too lazy (and a bit too early in the morning) to fire it up right now. If so, I'll try out Hard. I'm no FPS god but I do alright.

Yeah I am used to editing config files as well, and the good thing about it is that there are usually so many more options for tailoring it to suit your needs (and wants). But I know a lot of people who aren't proficient enough to do so, and I think it should always be an option in the actual game.

And thats acceptable for you???, that games on pc these days reach market when they clearly still need lots of work on, for me its still not working with latest drivers from amd-ati, instead of getting stuck for 5 seconds and be able to move for a milisecond the new drivers get it stuck for longer and run less long,
but my brother that has the exact same GFX card and uses same settings etc. the new drivers from amd-ati do work, and not to say what else is not working on my pc now with those drivers
bit strange dont u think, imo nothing to do with amd-ati / or nvidea drivers, lack of testing on different hardware from their part yes, gfx drivers that work for one card but not for the other exact same card brand etc. ... it doesnt

for me thats not acceptable that inferior products being sold these days and instead of fixing it, letting the community find out for themselves how to get it running, by creating config files and what not, nah cant agree on that, its clearly a lack of testing etc etc, we buy games to play them,
not to test out something thats not finished (beta ish state)/ not tested properly ... <- thats not my job thats their job, by now i spend more time on trying to get it playable, then a playtrough would take rofl, ...

*snip*

Yeah I agree, even PC games should be playable by people with little knowledge about computers (obviously). And it does indeed seem like us gamers have unwillingly become beta testers these past few years. I remember the last id game I got - Doom 3. Unpatched I never had any serious problems with it. I think it maybe crashed once or twice during 30 hours of play (several playthroughs). Even modded it worked just fine.

Hopefully developers will take note of this in the future. Though being realistic, they should have picked up on this a long time ago.

Edit: Grammar.

Maybe they thought they were doing us a favour by doubling our gaming time by making us fix problems.

I tried all the suggestions mentioned within these forums and nothing worked. I spent 15+ hours of trial and error and nothing... I just uninstalled it and I am asking for a refund, I don't know if Steam does that but it's worth a shot. I figure It'll be a long time before they actually get this game fully functional on the pc anyways, I have no hopes for a magic fix to make it all better(for me). Tons of new games coming out soon anyways. Booooo! Maybe I'll pick up Rage again in a couple months.. maybe.. this was a really bad experience. I really loath launch day of Skyrim!

Steam does give refunds in some cases, you can always try. But if I were you I would wait it out for a couple of months. I am pretty sure the game will reach a point eventually where it'll become generally playable. For the sake of everyone having problems, I sure hope so.

Sake or sanity? :whistling:

In all seriousness though, nothing will deter me from playing RAGE. I don't care who fixes it as long as it gets done in what I consider a timely manner (beginning of the business week would be good!). I love id games and of what I have played (currently running on 11.9 with AI off with no issues aside from a framerate in the lower 20's) it is my kind of shooter.
