Question Regarding the "hotbar"

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 12:10 pm

When I heard the game featured a hotbar for abilities, I was deeply disappointed. But perhaps I'm misunderstanding. To me, a hotbar means the game will revolve around point and click gameplay mechanics, abandoning the freedom of control that Elder Scrolls games have been known to offer.

My question is whether the gameplay mechanics will feature the freedom of looking around with the mouse, and moving with the "wasd" keys. To me, this control method is what makes TES games unique, and above all immersive. The lore is detailed and all, but I play games for the immersive experience... I would read books if I was a real stickler for story.

Does a hotbar mean that we won't have control of our character's movement, and rather point and click at what we want our characters to do? Or will the hotbar be integrated into the traditional TES control system?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umDr0mPuyQc Please let that answer your question. No. It's not runescape. You would actually be able to move, like most MMOs.

Dear smart-ass, here is a more direct question for thickheaded individuals such as yourself.
Is the control system similar to a TES game despite the existence of a hotbar?
If that still confuses your little head, I liken TES controls to that of an FPS.

Well if you're going to post a topic, at least be a little bit more specific and direct.
That attitude will get you nowhere. All you said was: pointing and clicking sort if movement. Now if you don't want this topic to be locked, I suggest you be a little bit more nicer.

That being said, if it's going to be an MMO, it will have WASD and arrow movement most likely, and the standard mouse clicking.

Okay well, if it doesn't feel like I'm playing Skyrim, Oblivion, or even Morrowind online, I see no reason why I should play this game over a sequel such as Guild Wars 2. The only reason I ever wished for an Elder Scrolls online game was to have that game-play break the boring trend of clicking icons to perform actions in an MMO. Abandoning a tried, tested and true style of innovative and unique gameplay (for a fantasy setting) just seems like crawling around after you've already learned to walk.

Well if you're not an MMO kind of person, then don't play it. Simple as that. It's not gonna be like any other ES. It's gonna be 3rd person multiplayer MMO. The only ES we have to play until the official console ES is back in like 2015-2017.

Well then it's not really an "ES" game in my honest opinion.

I like the idea of MMOs, but the standard controls ruin the immersion and bore me to sleep. I was always praying since I first played Morrowind that Bethesda would save the day and create an innovative MMO with the action-packed control system of their other games. But it looks like they crapped all over that dream... The target market for this game seems to be TES fans who also enjoy MMOs. That's a sliver of a market, and a recipe for failure a la "FFXIV".

We'll have to just wait and see. It may not seem like an TES game, but yet it is. You think it doesn't deserve the title ES, but we'll see. I can't wait honestly. I think it's definitely a step in the right direction, they just have to watch what they do, and don't mess it up.

I would call it a "TES: Travels" spinoff game

err no it will not be first person. there will be a limited number of skills. there will be a stamina resource used for blocking, staggers, sprinting, and breaking slows/stuns. autoattack is unknown. projectile dodging is unknown.

By FPS I don't mean a first person perspective, I mean the ability to move freely, feeling as though you are controlling the arms and legs of your character as opposed to telling him/her what to do next by highlighting your target and clicking an icon.

I am sure you can move with WSAD and moving the camera with the mouse.

I mean, if the controls feel familiar to playing skyrim, with the inclusion of a hotbar, I'm cool with that!

Yes, that's what I mean
oh ok. well we dont know for sure but the article about it said things like positioning and dodging would be key, so its safe to assume it will be WASD.

as for the combat, they said it would require hotkeys. but you could potentially bind your attack to your mouse if you so desired. not much different than pressing G or something though if you ask me.

I just hope it still feels like an Elder Scrolls game. Not just an Elder Scrolls skin on the traditional MMO model.

it should feel pretty similar. we'll need more details/gameplay videos to know for sure though.
